Not in my experience. I found a phone and attempted to hand it in. I couldn't. They gave me a number to ring and they recorded what I'd found but they wouldn't take the phone.
I found a number of phones and generally charge them and attempt to use the personal assistant to phone “home” or “mum” etc. if not I just wait for it to ring…. I’ve always managed to get the phone back to the owner without much fuss. Cards, can be returned to the bank of origin. If you can find one on the high street. Or a quick call to them will allow them to call the person involved to arrange collection, but more likely trigger a new card. Can’t see the point in getting police involved. They’re busy enough unless it’s illegal stuff.
It probably had cards in I didn't actually open it. Who knows maybe it was empty and they were "binning" that too.
I'd have opened it to see if they folded notes and put them in it. I say that because Laura's mum puts 20's in the back of her phone case. I'm not ashamed to admit if I found a tenner folded up in a card holder I'd pocket it and hand the cards in. I once went to the local chippy on my way home from the pub. When I got home I realised I'd left my wallet with £60 on the counter. When I rang them they said they'd found it and put it somewhere safe. I went the next day and my wallet was there with £20 in it. They'd half inched £40 quid. The last time I was a good Samaritan I found a tenner hanging out of the cash machine at Greasbrough Post Office. I handed it in at the Post Office counter and asked if I had to sign anything. The guy behind the counter just said thankyou and put it in the till. I felt a right muppet. Only place I'm honest is at work because my livelihood isn't worth it.
I find the gain from honesty in personal well being far outweighs any negative happenings… I always ask people to pay the good will forward.
It's poetic justice at its best. They chose to leave their belongings on the beach. Some of it was cans, some of it was a card holder. If they didnt expect anyone to run after them and hand them back their cans, why would they expect anyone to run after them and hand them back their card holder? They chose to inconvenience others, and so now they will be inconvenienced. Karma is a beautiful thing to watch
How do you know? You don't know the financial status of who you're robbing from. Do you nick stuff from supermarkets?
It was a hypothetical, whimsical answer on my part. No I don't but I'm sure loads of people have found money and not handed it in.
I just found it a bit of a jarring thing to say. I'm sure people do do it, but that doesn't make it right. I'd consider nicking from supermarkets to be more ethically defensible - you're stealing from a huge faceless corporation rather than dipping your hand directly into a random person's pocket.
Sorry but not my experience either my wife found a passport, I'd card ,bankcard in the car park at Manchester airport we found the guy on Facebook luckily he only lived in Sheffield and told him we would hand it in at Barnsley police station at a set time thinking we could hand it over with the police as the middle man if you get what I mean. Lady on the front desk told us if you give me that we will cut up everything including his passport and return them to the relevant department, she said if you have found him just return yourself you will save him a load of trouble. We did as it turns out the guy is pizza chef in very nice restaurant in the centre of Sheffield he and the owners treated me and the wife to lovely three course meal even giving her a nice bottle of wine to take home.
Like I said to Jay, just what it says on Police websites, clearly not what happens in practice though. Nice result all round in your case for both you and him.
