Wasn't he more of a Technical Director? Tasked with sorting out the academies and coaching/training for the FA, and advising Notts County and Sheffield Wednesday at different times? Not sure he held a traditional DOF role. I also don't think the DOF back then is what it is now.
I think a Director of Football could be a good idea, to provide some consistency at the club. It could prevent Conway having to step in to manage transfer policy (lol). I’m not sure an ex reds player is necessarily a good way to go though.
Shouldn't need a director of football to point out that having Styles and Palmer as your "experienced" midfielders is a gamble. And watching Khaled trying to pass them off as experienced players was pretty cringeworthy. As well, it shouldn't need a DoF to highlight that paying one of your bigger salaries to a player with a worse injury record than Andy Carroll is probably a bad idea.
