    I'm not for one minute saying it is..

    Just like the Ireland of 100 years ago aint representative of my wife and/or her family.

    However some of the comments on here seemed to show a lack of understanding as to why some Irish may have a problem with the UK/English. I was just making the point that there are some possibly valid reasons that are still in living memory. Possibly more justification then the Taffs and the Jocks have :)

    I am guessing that if you a Puritanical nut like Cromwell,

    then anyone who follows a different religion to yourself is going to be considered "Godless"

    Britain of the 70's is a different place to now,

    if it wasn't do you think the IRA would have negotiated with teh Governments.

    Cromwell had made it very clear..

    that the Irish campaign was intended to stop Ireland being a potential base for Charlie 2 to use to regain power. As such the extreme scorched earth policy he used could perhaps be justified. Even more so given the social mores of the time were different to our own 21st century one.

    A modern day equivalent to Cromwell's operations in Ireland could be, say, the current situation in Sudan ?
