Loved that day. I went on one of the free coaches the club put on. Absolute scenes when M’voto scored, I couldn’t get ‘he’s magic, you know’ out of my head for days.
Steve Cooper scored a few. Home to Brighton from an Ian Banks cross. Remember one against Ipswich as well. Was looking at his stats and he only actually scored 17 goals for us. Felt like a lot more!
Good point. I’ve heard Shearer & Lineker moaning about how wingers always cut in & left footers play on the right & vice versa meaning strikers get less crosses so that makes sense.
My favourite moment for him was playing Huddersfield at home, we were 2-1 up. They threw everyone forward in the last minute, keeper included. Mvoto got the ball and ran the whole length of the pitch just to miss the open net. Legend.
I remember Arjan de Zeeuw scoring a couple during our promotion season, away at Port Vale and away at Wolves.
I can’t be the only person who forgot we were playing in blue as the cross came over and was looking at the guy in the Red shirt diving for the header, can I??
Technique wise, surely the greatest header ever? Diving for the ball is one thing, scoring a header from that distance another, but diving for the header from that distance and heading the ball in such a way to make it loop over the keeper into the net is just brilliant.
What was he doing?! Not under the remotest bit of pressure even! But what a signing he'd turn out to be. Also not really a diving header, the dive taken in despair once he realised what had happened! Easy to forget what a tidy second tier side Grimsby were for many years. Played some lovely football, never a pushover.
Quite a few people going mental in shell suits I’ve noticed how fans used to celebrate more on the old days. They really go for it
One of the best goals I've ever seen was a diving header. A Norwich player from a corner. It was into his own net mind, but and absolute peach of a header. Some time in the 80s I think it was.
Back in the day Andy Gray ex Everton,Villa and latter Sky was the best I've seen,I do find myself thinking when they try a difficult finish by full length with the boot why didn't he try the old fashioned diving header. It's a skill that going to less important heading full stop as the game goes forward it can't be coached at junior level rightly so and I'm sure it will come further up the pyramid in time. The trend away from playing wingers may in anticipation of the game changing in a fundamental way I know the balls are lighter these days but we can't have pros dying young because of continual heading of the ball. Sorry for going slightly off topic but didn't want to start another thread on similar topic and I think it's a big debate going forward.
