If you agree with that, then the arguement that the second-tier of English football is our natural level because that's where we have been for the majority of our existence doesn't count either. You can't have it both ways.
Re: so you do not remember the Gills and the Iron in the championship then Bit more than contenders Marlon. We started the season with a big bang and never dropped below fourth place all season. Now THAT is how to enjoy a football season but it's a pity that the Oakwell faithful didn't actually catch on until towards the end. I think people suddenly woke up to the fact that we actually did have a chance of going up.
Precisely and my original point was that the likes of Preston have had a much better history than we have overall. Not being in the First Division since 1961 doesn't matter. Their whole history stacked up against ours is better, but we just happen to have enjoyed happier times more recently. It will change though - that's the nature of football. Only lucky clubs like Everton hang on to their top flight status for ever. Most go up and down, some like yo-yos. Everton were a bit lucky to survive that year when we went down from the PL. They and Tottenham were our rivals in those last few months but we just couldn't finish strongly enough.
Course I can. We've spent 77 years in the second tier. In the last thirty three years we've spent only four years below this level. The mid sixties to mid seventies were a blip. Not the norm as many on here would like to think.
Quite reight CT, but 17/18 of those years spent in Division 2 was when Division 2 was the bottom league.
Mid sixties to just before eighties to be precise and if you watched them for most of that period I think you'll appreciate it was or felt anyway a lot more than just a blip
Re: so you do not remember the Gills and the Iron in the championship then I meant the promo season dek not the playoff season , we were never out of a playoff position all season and went up as runners up but the crowds didn t surge till last 8 or 9 games from end of season.
Re: so you do not remember the Gills and the Iron in the championship then Yep I remember it well played some absolutely cracking football to boot just like the early eighties but with more bite.couldn't fathom why people weren't flocking down at well . End of season I was out of work and couldn't afford season tickets for prem season as I used to get four and if I couldn't afford younguns s/t I wasn't going neither, broke my heart but there were plenty of takers for our seats tat season.
Re: so you do not remember the Gills and the Iron in the championship then Oh sorry to hear you missed out on us getting tonked by Chelsea and the rest on a regular basis. It didn't seem to matter though because it was only a one-year adventure so there were no expectations. Actually winning matches, like the 4-3 against Southampton, was fantastic though. I was in Gloucester then but had to have a season ticket, even though it meant about 16 or 17 300 mile round trips that season, plus a fair few away games as well. I never felt I was taking a regular fans seat though, seeing as I have been following them since the early sixties wherever I have been living (ie, mostly away from Barnsley!)
Re: so you do not remember the Gills and the Iron in the championship then You definitely deserved yours, friend of mine who lived in Hereford also had one that season Tbh I wasn't bitter about it just one of those things younguns seem to understand it makes you appreciate it when you have one. My bgget worry is when we didn't know whether we were gonna ave a club or not
Re: so you do not remember the Gills and the Iron in the championship then Yes that was a worrying time although I felt a bit detached from it all living so far away. I had a couple of brief spells in Hereford in the 1970s. First time I was a young airman going through training at Credenhill with no car and had to hitch hike up on Friday nights and back again Sunday night. Never had a problem, not once. RAF uniform was my passport to free travel!
Re: so you do not remember the Gills and the Iron in the championship then I can see where you are coming from mate,it hard to weigh up why they don't come to oakwell but can turn up in their masses for a Wembley trip.I honestly think if we had a prolonged effort ie,more than one season where we challenged for the playoffs we'd get bigger gates, but without some real backing with a cart load of money its not going to happen,we've effectively been priced out of the 2nd division/championship.fcukin soul destroying for us.
