Still a little perplexed why folk want a board but only want to show the time and score, I'm reasonably sure most of us can tell the time and remember which team has scored... either its done properly or not at all

Alternatively, they could forget about all that match day experience ***** and allow supporters to chat and discuss the game on the terraces like they used to do. And that means gagging that gobshite announcer and turning the deafening fcking tannoy off and allow the crowd to generate it's own atmosphere. A simple, elegant pair of scoreboards will do just fine, one each end.

A simple, elegant pair of scoreboards won't bring in hundreds of thousands in advertising revenue though.

Neither will the one you're on about. The advertising levels at Oakwell are fine as they are, I'm sick to fcking death of ***** everywhere you look. Give football back to the fans, not the vulgar corporate brands.

Re: I'm quite surprised at the reaction to this...

Don't get me wrong, a new scoreboard would enhance the ground. However, I think a proper Social club would enhance the Club more.... and frankly nothing is more embarassing about the huge cavity that is the East Lower concourse. Biggest waste of space ever. Even the bits that were once functional, are an ambarrassment. Crap food, crap beer, no stock, no shop, shutters up.

Why don't you think that a video board would generate advertising? I'm pretty certain that I could secure enough scoreboard advertising to raise 100k in 10 years EASILY without any effort at all and i'm even more certain that by charging the right amount and using a proper commercial department then the revenue would be much much higher.

ps, I could raise 100k using local businesses and no corporate brands at all.

1k for 5 30 second adverts per game. Sell 10 of those and that's 30 minutes of advertising on the board: 5 minutes before kick off, 5 at half time, 5 at full time, 5 during the first half, 5 during the second half. Not too intrusive at all. £10k per year advertising generated, £100k over 10 years. Local businesses already pay 2k just for a static ad around the edge of the pitch. I'm offering a video advert for half the price. It'd sell like hot cakes.

Local businesses supporting a local club and making 100k in advertising.

Plus the extra value added to the CK Becket and hayseldens sponsorship deals plus the extra value added to the match sponsorship packages (usually local businesses) and the extra value added to the player sponsorships (again local people).

If you hate the big brand commercialism of the game then look at it another way, 100k+ of LOCAL advertising could be used to offset what we make from the big brand sponsorship around the ground and would enable us to do away with them without losing a penny if thats what we wanted to do.

Your figures don't add up - no-one would look at it and it wouldn't be a worthwhile investment. And I don't want it in my eyes. I want to chose what I look at, without cynical w@nkers trying to manipulate where I spend my money, particularly when I'm at football. I said on another thread, if electronic pitchside advertising ever comes to Oakwell that will be me finished with BFC.

Don't forget, whatever you sell on the scoreboard will detract from other sales (e.g. around the ground). Not many companies are likely to think - "wow, there's an electronic scoreboard now, let's advertise twice as much".
Electronic scoreboards are of appeal to companies that want their stuff all over the place - i.e. via TV. Sadly, that isn't going to happen any time soon at Oakwell.

Also. Who operates it? It will need programming, and someone on hand to run it on matchdays .... more expense. I just don't see it as the gold mine you're making out.(currently). if we were to get into the Prem, that would be a different kettle of fish.

A scoreboard would be nice, it would make the ground look more up to date. It might generate a bit of income over time. It would also require maintenance, and operation. Not essential by any means, IMO.

Think the key point that everyone's missing is that it's the club suggestion we use the money to buy one. If we decide we don't want to, we don't have to. At the end of the day it's our money and it's being donated to the club to do something that we want.

That could be signing a young laiker, buying TVs around the ground etc. Anything. Obviously has to be agreed with the club but a video board is one suggestion. I think it's a good one but it's up to the majority.
