RE: why can't we ban these ....

you can't ban something which is a natural result of sentient beings. Not as it is now, as all religions are Barstewardisations of what was the original message - but the idea of gods and creators is part of the human psyche. Besides, you might argue that state and church is seperated in the US, yet look at that right wing christian zealot Bush, nobody banned that fecker from slaughtering 500,000 in the name of his beliefs.

"the idea of gods and creators is part of the human psyche"

I guess I'm not human then. To be fair, this wouldn't be the first time that accusation was levelled at me.

    to me, at least....

...religion is simply on a dead end of a branch on the tree of evolution. a sort of once useful tool that has served its purpose, but is now a strange and rather pointless cul-de-sac (ooops, i said sac ha ha!). cavemen, not knowing much at all about their environment, or anything else for that matter, needed something to explain the things around them. it also became something to help to keep going when all else seemed lost. basically a survival tool. but now we have science and (some) understanding of the world and indeed universe around us. we also have laws which most people generally tend to stick to on the whole - (the big ones i mean!).

myths and fables help pass down morals, for want of a better word, which in turn have become laws. (no robbing, murdering, sticking it in the cat, etc) which starts a whole new set of questions. the theory of evolution will one day FINALLY rid us of religion, but religion has already stopped (or at least slowed down) our own evolvution, so we're out of the loop. Evolution wise, because we treat the sick, look after the poor and needy (to a certain extent) and dont kill whoever we meet, survival of the fittest (well, best suited) doesn't really apply to humans any more.

now my head hurts. anyway - religion bad, tarn good. 3-1 to the reds tonight, by the way.

Well, not everyone. There'sprobably a distinction between the originiation of an idea and choosing to believe in something after its origination. Although religion, or to be more specific its functions and core ideas manifest themselves in all kinds of ways.

Evolutionary psychology probably explains some of it very well.

well you say much of interest and some things you'll be glad to hearI might ask but frankly can't be arsed :)

For anyone remotely interested in the psychology of religion there are some excellent books on the subject and none better than 'Erich Fromm - The Dogma of Christ'.
