I didn't realise we had this reputation

and I certainly do not think it is accurate. Of course there are some racists but I would argue that there are no more here than in other places!

No he is not a racist Oakwell

he was being genuine. That was the impression is the impression he has. Although he has never been to Barnsley. He was questioning what he had been told and the impression he had.

    In that case, why?

I have ben born and raised in Barnsley and I live in Barnsley. I have never thought we have a particular problem with racism.

What I've been alerted to today is that we have a problem with outsiders perception. I did not realise we had this problem either!

    RE: In that case, why?

I have known some racist abuse at Barnsley football matches. But very little and far less than I have heard attending matches with some other clubs! I do not see how this proves that the people of Barnsley are deserving of a reputation for being racist?

I agree it would be good to ask somebody like Bruce Dyer (or even Darren Moore etc) whether he thinks the people of Barnsley deserve to be known as racist.

maybe Barnsley might have the reputation due to such idiots spreading it around, and in some odd way revelling in it!

I think its a perception of all towns with a lack of diversity

and seen as uncosmopolitan, but i think its generally then as issue of ignorance. People aren't used to being around people of diferent race and so aren't quite comfortable round them which in turn makes the ethnic minorities feel uncomfortable.

That said, I nearly took my mate who is black to wembley and I can't decide whether i'm glad he couldn't make it or not becuase of the racist abuse dished out by our fans to JCR and KO. Part of me wishes he had been there so we could have made them feel ashamed of themselves

well if I hear any racist abuse I tell them myself.

I would never shy away from inviting someone to Barnsley or to a match just because they happen to have brown skin and I don't think anyone else should either!

If we have this problem as a town we really need to sort it out now!

after I had this discussion at work today, I asked a couple of people what their experience of racism was. Both said that they had never had any racist abuse directed at them.

    no

but I will reitterat that Barnsley is no more racist than any other large town city, perhaps its even less so due to limited presence of other "races"

Far more racism in the likes of bradford, blackburn, burnley etc where the presence of large "ethnic" communities has polarised and given focus to racist tendencies..IMHO like.
