Excellent post DiscoTyke If you disagree with immagration the majority of the time you are classed as a racist. It's happened time and time again on this board
RE: I think its a perception of all towns with a lack of diversity Yeah, i've brought him down to oakwell quite a few times and had no problems, but something wasn't right that day at wembley, a diferent atmosphere. I think its just that racism is still an issue is society throughout England but it is getting better. I live in york and one of the presidents of a local football club we were playing got a lifetime ban for racially abusing two of our players. utter ******. It is really sad. In some ways in places like Barnsley some people might be racist without realising it just thorugh ignorance. Do you think its more likely to be an issue in areas where there's more diversity because there;s more tension?
RE: I am going to say yes This was the first time he had any when coming to Oakwell but I've heard and seen how our fans have acted, one occasion was at huddersfield when their brought on an asian player couple of fans stood up and started chant a certain name at him over and over at him! I know it was only a couple fans but these are the people that give the club a bad name and utimately the town!
I agree but I think we are still seen as a racist town, I'm not saying we are the only ones far from it but we still have this stigma attached to the town
RE: I think its a perception of all towns with a lack of diversity I hope that works the over way round aswell. Hope you would also tell the blacks in brixton who racially abuse white people how wrong it is, or the blacks in Birmingham where i experienced it personally
RE: I think its a perception of all towns with a lack of diversity yes I think it is more likely to be an issue in places of with greater diversity. I think it is fair to say that there is a lot of ignorance in Barnsley where race is concerned. But I do not think we have a 'race' problem. More generally (not just in the context of Barnsley) race issues are often confused with other issues, such as clashes of cultures and religions and issues with immigration.
RE: I think its a perception of all towns with a lack of diversity of course it works every way Kanekat. Chinese and Japnese, black and white, asian and black etc. Racism is not exclusive.
RE: I think its a perception of all towns with a lack of diversity I just wanted to point that out as for some reason in the media it's a very one sided affair
RE: I am going to say yes and what did you do to sort it out? a. tell them to shut up? b. tell a steward? c. tell a policeman? d. identify them to the police or stewards later? e. nowt? I'm not having a go at you, but trying to highlight that we in the majority need to take action to sort this crap out!
RE: I think its a perception of all towns with a lack of diversity inevitably there will be more white racist events due to having a majority white population.
RE: I think its a perception of all towns with a lack of diversity Yeah think i agree too. Although i think its more of a diferent issue too - ie more diversity might mean more community tension but the city centre may be a lot more accomodating of diferent races. I think were ethnic minorities may worry about going to places like Barnsley is that they are very much a minority and may be treated diferently. I suppose if I was black i would feel more uncomfortbale on a night out in a predominantly white area than say a large cosmopolitan city
Definately mate And I'm still angry at myself for not doing anything at wembley. I was there with my missus and there was a big group of lads who were pissed and i was getting so angry but the girlfriend asked me to leave it and i did cos i didn't want the day ruining. Not an excuse though and i let myself down. that said I had zero confidence in the wembley stewards to do anything
RE: I think its a perception of all towns with a lack of diversity I think if anyone was honest they would have to admit that white racists will always attract the most media attention. Look at the Stephen Lawrence case i can remember some of the suspects names because they were in the media that much but spin it around the other way i can not remember a black on white murder receiving that much attention
Racism OR colour prejudicism 2 different things to me. i've got back to 1578 in my family tree (all yorkshire Addingham ) and Dutch before that
RE: I think its a perception of all towns with a lack of diversity perhaps, I could understand that. I have never felt uncomfortable amongst groups of other races. In fact I have never thought about it. But perhaps that is because they are friends and not strangers. I'm not sure. Anyway I think this thread has enlightened me to the fact that Barnsley does have a problem with being percieved as racist! Even if in fact Barnsley is not a particularly hostile place for other races. What can we do about it?
RE: I think its a perception of all towns with a lack of diversity true Kanekat. White on black, first assumption is racial aggravation/motivation, black on white and the same assumption is not made.
RE: Definately mate I can understand that! But it should not have been just you, there must have been scores of people sat around you all thinking the same as you! We all need to stand up for ourselves. But this is not a problem that particular to Barnsley.
RE: I think its a perception of all towns with a lack of diversity Very true. Then you have the black on black murders and it's immediately linked to gangs. The media dictates all this and contributes towards some prejudices
Wish I knew! Thats the million dollar question. I think society in general has come on leaps and bounds but it may never be sorted. I suppose walking in to a random pub in say Brixton and not knowing anyone would be pretty indimidating. Just reading Barack Obama's book "Dreams From My Father". Brilliant book that speaks incredibly eloquently about race and identity
