    I do agree with her

to an extent!! She does make valid points and Barnsley town centre has been ran into the ground over a long period of time. We have no cinema, no proper theatre and the market is struggling.

We should blame this on the failure of the local authority! Admittedly the town has faced very very hard times over the last 20 years but so have our neighbouring towns. Doncaster has managed to attract inward investment far more successfully than Barnsley despite the entire Donnygate fiasco!!!!

South Yorkshire was an Objective 1 area for EU fundings and so a lot of funding was available. Rotherham successfully snapped up this opportunity in the Dearne Valley and have businesses secured within their borough in the Dearne Valley paying Rotherham council tax. Doncaster used the cash to help regenerate the Lakeside area. I don't deny that Barnsley have been successful in a lot of regeneration, but if comparison is made with our neighbours it could be labelled a failure.

The disproportionately low amount of the Objective 1 funding was allocated to Barnsley year on year. Now blame for this cannot be squarely laid with the local authorities as I admit applications for the funding must often be made by business enterprises. Nor can blame be laid with those allocated the funding as Barnsley produced disproportionately low numbers of applications.

We have had a major success in securing the cash for the remaking Barnsley project, which should be good when it finally arrives. This has been in the planning for the over 6 years and work on the new Barnsley markets will not start for at least another year.

The town centre is hardly buzzing with life. Yeh we have lots of bars and stuff but we are missing a lot that other areas have and I think this girl being an outsider can see this very clearly. I personally wouldnt want a Starbucks, but many of the young people in Barnsley would and they will be taking thir custom to Wakefield, Doncaster or Meadowhall!

I apologise for the rant I just feel our town has had the thin end of the wedge for too long!! Good work to those who have secured investment for the long awaited regeneration! I just wish it could happen sooner and feel annoyed that we are lagging behind our neighbouring towns. I believe that the people of Barnsley deserve better and deserve to enjoy amenities and facilities and not have to travel far and wide to have some fun!

    Rant over.

Find it hard to believe that's genuine

Surely it's someone taking the mick. If she hates it here so much, she does have an option........

    Yep, agree with some things

I am and always will be proud to be from Barnsley, no matter what anyone says about it, but it is pretty obvious that the town is lacking certain things (such as choice of good restaurants, cinema, etc.). Though for a smallish town its probably not that bad (I've been to shed loads of places that are worse). Still annoys when other people slag the place off though. We're allowed to do it. Others should watch their lip!
