That's just the point, how can it be dangerous, in a democracy and as such it should be the will of the people on very important issues like this. Sometimes it's too dangerous to leave it to a few overpaid fat cats in parliament who have their own adjenda which is totally divorced from the good of the people they should be representing. IMO
We didn't. We joined in 73 under Heath. The referendum was in 75 and was about whether we should stay in. Wilson called it as the Labour government was split over the issue. Labour had a policy of withdrawal in 83 and got hammered. If people want a referendum or withdrawal I suggest they vote Tory or UKIP. Miliband is right to oppose a referendum. It would be economic suicide to leave the EU. The people who most oppose the EU are the little Englanders on the right. They're still living in the 50s. The world has moved on.
I wouldn't say his opinion is more important but perhaps the governments opinion is considerably more informed? I could vote on Europe but my vote would basically be decided by what the media, who have an agenda, have told me. In that way I agree it would be quite dangerous
So you think the Government know better than the media ? The same media that runs the Tory Party ? Ok
I think they actually KNOW more details about the relevant laws, rules and economic costs and benefits of being in the EU than the media does. That doesn't mean that I think they act on that information in the best way or that they aren't influenced by outside forces
The problem you are not taking into account is that most voters do not know if we should be in or out. It is like picking from six members on a board and you need three. How the hell do you know which to pick. Your choices may be the worst three. In reality if we do not keep in Europe we are going to financially suffer with not only Europe getting into financial trouble but us also. We need to be in to stand our corner for what is best for us. Not isolated like Cameron. Blair might not be liked by a lot nowadays but he has more knowledge than most and he is right to back Milliband and to stay in Europe
So why do you think that the Government know more than the Opposition ? Do you think that they only learn about these things AFTER they get elected ? If so that shows why Farage talks so much ballax !
Sorry I wasn't clear. Or rather I was actually completely wrong with my wording. I meant the main political parties in general not just the current government. What I meant to say was that political parties know far more about the real issues regarding being in or out of Europe than the general public do. Although now you mention it I would guess that the current government is probably privvy to more information than the opposition as I would assume they cover up some facts and figures. Thats probably not the case to be honest which only goes to further show how little I, as a member of the public, know on the matter.
A referendum is usually a way that a political party has of obscuring divisions within its own ranks. It's quite clever and sounds very democratic by saying that the British people are the only ones that can decide but by saying so it clearly shows that the political party that offers the idea CAN'T decide. It shows a split in the party. If referendums are such a good idea we could have them every week on something or other. By offering the idea of a referendum Cameron is keeping his own party quiet as well as trying to nullifying UKIP. By NOT offering a referendum Milliband is, for once, showing good leadership by simply saying 'if you vote for me you're voting for Europe'. He deserves some respect for that in my book even though I'll not be voting for Labour
