Energy prices predicted to rise to £3,850 in January...

Currently spending around £100 a month on electricity and £35 on Gas. We do have air conditioning in the bedrooms and I have been using it so i could get it down. Also up I think with the kids being off school and we have 4 adults in the house plus the 2 kids.
We tend to do well through the winter as we all prefer to be cooler so we do t tend to have the heating on a lot. Obviously we warm the house through but don't sit with it on all day.
But given what I'm currently paying if i were subject to the rise in October I could easily be looking at a extra £120 a month for the same usage.

 

If Jeremy Corbyn’s energy policies had become law, your energy bill would be £3,000 cheaper this year.

Corporate Energy profits would have been £120 billion lower.

The national grid & energy corporations would now be owned by you.

Onshore wind - which is 4 times cheaper - would be being built in abundance.

This is just the tip of the iceberg.

There has never been a bigger missed opportunity in my lifetime.

 

Ours is £117 a month at the moment on a fixed contract that ends at the end of September. We don't have gas as we have a heat pump, so we save on the gas standing charge as well as having no consumption. That's a saving that many people miss if they're considering a heat pump. We have solar on the roof, a battery and a wood burning stove. In all, we're very lucky, and we'll get through the winter OK, even though we'll get hammered in October and again in January. However, it doesn't stop me thinking that the price trends are unsustainable and will lead to a breakdown in society if nothing is done. It's not just here - it's the same in Germany, if not worse, and they're going to be hit by Putin if he turns the gas off even more.

 

Does your heat pump use a lot of electric mate? Mine seems to..the rhi scheme covered it before but now not so much. I think I’ll be looking at bills of circa £700 a month once the heat pump is turned on for the winter….that’s if it does! I’ve stocked up on logs and jumpers !

 

Bang on. Nuclear power generation should never be out sourced IMO. Sooner or later China will an enemy of this country, and it'll be just like Russia and their gas. The French already own swaithes of UK utlilities and use the profits to subsidise their own energy costs. I remember Thatcher justifying the mines closure programme by saying we can get coal from Poland cheaper than we could dig it out of the ground. That was only true because we COULD dig out of the ground. As soon you have no UK coal provisions the import prices go up. It's hardly rocket science. These people seem to be blinded by what to me is perfectly obvious.

NONE of our power generation, or RAIL or STEEL or any other strategic resource should be outsourced, quite the reverse, they should be nationalised.

 

To be fair it does use a significant amount of electricity during the winter months, but as we don't have a gas supply we save about £100 per year on the gas standing charge and of course we have zero gas consumption. It's a ground source heat pump (as I think yours is?) which is far more efficient that an air source version. Our direct debit is currently £117 per month, and we're currently just £20 in debit. By the end of August we'll be in credit again as we're hardly using anything at the moment. Because we have a battery we hardly use any grid power at all in the summer months - the solar keeps us going during the day and the battery at night. I save energy for cooking by going to the Curry Mahal 3 times a week. The turnover point is in about mid September, then again mid April, when the shorter winter days start to take effect and the consumption rockets.

We've not yet had a quote from October onwards, but I estimate it will be about £350 per month. I'll soon find out if that is pessimistic or optimistic.

It's also warm in there, so you can save money on heating and cooking at the same time.

Our heat pump is a Viesmann Vitocal 242 6kW.

 

If everyone in the country refused to provide meter readings it would put the energy companies into disarray. They’re only allowed to back bill 12 months use of power under the back billing regs and if they don’t have any information to go on, what are the going to do.

 

That wouldn't work, as there is an exception to the restriction on back billing in the case of "obstructive or manifestly unreasonable behaviour" on the part of the customer.

 

Also since 2016 if we had the same Tax regime as Norway the treasury would be £1trn better off (that's not a typo) from Oil and gas companies - Shell paid no tax in the UK last year.

Does that apply specifically to the customer preventing the supplier getting a meter reading, or would it also come into effect if the customer is just an all round basic lovely person*?

 

I looked into it a while ago as I relied on the rule and the supplier accepted it. I couldn’t find any specific definition but from memory it seems more like preventing them from coming to read it. It’s widely drafted but if you just claimed ignorance you may be ok*

UPDATE: I'm know I'm replying to myself, but I've just got a quote for a new 12 month fixed tariff at £251 per month, it's more than double what we're currently paying but better than I expected, so I've gone for it as it rules out the possibility of a further increase in January. Hope I've done the right thing!!!

 

What rate do you get per KWH mate ?

£7K for the next 12 months.

 

If that trend continues, by December 2023 you'll owe them more than the UK's annual gross domestic product. Should start robbing banks if I were you mate. Starting with the Bank of England.

To be serious for a second, this can't be allowed to continue. We'll soon be at the stage where people earning 25 grand a year cannot afford to feed themselves. If they live alone. No chance if they have a family. Two jobs will still leave you starving. While companies make billions in profits. It's got to stop.

 

Instead we are absolutely sleepwalking into it.
