No one's allowed to be a nationalist in England anymore so maybe that's the problem.

So how can you prove yourself to be world class ?

are Lampard & Gerrard ? Or is Gerrard held back from proving he's world class because he has to comply with managers who believe that it's right to play the eleven best players irrespective as to whether that creates a sucessful team ? In short can you only be a World class player if you play for a sucessful international team ?

RE: So how can you prove yourself to be world class ?

Or if you stand out on the international stage. I agree that being an outstanding player in the Champions League is a part of it and for sure Gerrard has been that for Liverpool and I'm sure that if an England manager would play him in the centre of midfield with a holding player over a period of years he would prove himself. But he hasn't been able to do this and as such hasn't proved himself on the international stage - whether thats his fault or not.

You can't claim to be world class on how potentially good you can be.

As for the rest of them no one currently comes near other than Owen and possibly Ferdinand in my opinion who have both impressed at major championships albeit in the past for Owen and who is now clearly past his best so you can probably eliminate him from the category on that basis.

Lampard is terrible for England, Rooney has become a worse player over the years, and Terry is just good in the air (wow). None of our full backs ever stand out. Our strikers are poor and we have no wingers to speak of. the there's the keepers...

    Define "World Class" first

Do you have to have won something domestically, on the Europeanstage and then Internationally?

Or is it because you can hold down a starting place for Man Utd, shag Colleen and get paid loads of money?

Potentially yes. But he couldn't be arsed to play international football a lot of the time and never played in a Euros or a World Cup. So how can someone who hasn't played on the biggest stage be called world class?

I'm sure he has the ability to be called world class but without proving it we'll never know.

So by definition he isn't world class. Its like Kimbo Slice beating up cranks in the street and then claiming he's the best fighter in the UFC. Which he has since proved he isn't.

The second one for sure. Although if I was a world class footballer I wouldn't be shacking up with Colleen.

I guess World Class would be defined as consistently standing out in and influencing games at the highest club level and highest international level and being in serious contention for selection in a World XI squad/team.

Clearly its a highly subjective issue.

I see what you're saying but he never proved himself on the International or World Stage. Of course he clearly had the talent to be world class but for all we know he could have gone to 2 world cups and been **** in both. Then people would have said he was a great player for Man U but never proved himself.

Anyway, can you call someone world class who retired at 26? Beckhams had enough grief for going to the USA at 32.

now that you can only see them on elitist television how can they be a national team?

a national team should seen be on national tv, not to the few who can afford it.

whole generations of kids will miss out, just like they do with boxing & cricket.

Theres only one team I'd pay to watch and they play at Oakwell.

When you go to a Barnsley game

this season, you are probably (depending on the opposition) perhaps a bit apprehensive, but nevertherless you know that sometimes you will see a really good game and the team will win. Maybe not often enough, but sometimes.

When you watch an England game (if you can) you are almost certain that it is going to be ****, win or lose.

It is a disgrace that our national team is not on free to air TV. Until that changes, I will concentrate on the reds and ignore England. I hope they win but that is about it.

Me too. Surely national sport should always be on free to air tv?

Will never happen but maybe the government need to get a hold of this.

    Not true

But everyone remembers when we are ****.

Nobody remembers when we battered Russia 3-0 at Wembley last qualifying campaign and should have got more. And whilst we didn't win any awards for style in the last world cup, we were knocked out to Portugal on penalties, it could have gone either way. We could have won that world cup with a bit more luck.

Agreed on the "free to air" comment tho mate, but you know for a fact that football has moved on and the highest bidder will always win, regardless of whats best for the national team's supporters.

    RE: Not true

I think part of it is that we're not even entertaining in defeat.

We can say what we want about hype, pressure from fans and tactics but I'm sick of watching players, who earn a fortune (and it is relevant because its generally an indicator of your level within a profession) but can't string more than a few passes together or create any real pattern of play.
