I think that. plus the fact we don't have an established spinner and our best two seamers have a combined age of around 75 means his workload would be just too much to be batting at 5.
He’ll do okay at 6 but I just think our second best batter shouldn’t be higher up. He’s become more of a batting all-rounder over the years but his average would surely increase if he came in earlier. The squad should be announced today or certainly by the end of the week
I didn't think a reset and looking to the future would mean allowing someone to play the world champions without having any warm up games when even our current and former captains have turned out for their counties.
Seen that reported, with Brook joining purely as a reserve. Don't see the logic of dropping Root down to 4, with Bairstow and Stokes at 5 and 6. Then putting a middle order batter at 3.
I agree except I don’t think Brook will play and Foakes will keep wicket. Which Overton is picked ? I see this squad is only for first two tests …. what’s that all about ?
That’s a surprise… many pundits were saying Jamie may get chosen as he’s had a good season and bowls faster. Can’t we play them both with only one on pitch at a time? …. nobody will know
From the squad announced: Lees Crawley Root Bairstow Brook Stokes Foakes Broad Leach Potts Anderson Think I'd definitely have Compton, Matt Parkinson and Jamie Overton in my squad though. And all 3 would be playing. Fingers crossed for Sam Curran recovering fully from his back injury as his batting has come on leaps and bounds. Looks a top order batsman in the making.
The squad selection is a bit of a shocker to be honest. Not sure what Crawley has done to deserve his place. Would have Burns, Sibley, Compton and Robson all above him. Bairstow's record when batting in the top 5 is pretty poor, and his numbers jump up quite a bit at 6&7, so if Stokes is batting at 6, then it should be Bairstow/Foakes competing for the 7 spot, and Brook and Pope competing for 5. And then they should've called up a specialist top order batter to go in at 3. Either one of the openers listed above, or Bohannon or Bracey. Pope at 3 and Bairstow at 5 is more likely to fail than it is to succeed. Just a strange selection
Then we can have another red ball reset and go again in the third test. I can't think of the slogan for that yet.
I wonder if they expect others to be in the reckoning soon? Archer for example was expected to be involved in a Sussex seconds match and then some T20 games in the coming weeks. If he gets through them alright with a managed workload I can see him being called back up.
Yeah I suppose Woakes , Curran and Malan may then be fit and ready for consideration as well as Robinson, Wood and Archer !!!!!
