You certainly had a bit of everything over the 3 sessions ! The bowling by Boult and Southee at the start of our innings was absolutely world class. Then we had Bairstow and Overton…. Test cricket at its best with a bit of T20 thrown in
Hope the link works, brilliant summary. On the series as a whole. England v New Zealand: 'Jonny Bairstow revels in life on the England rollercoaster' - https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/61932718
I'm no purist and I've never played the game. (Only at school) But am a big fan of one day. And to a slightly lesser extent T20. ( can't stand the razzmataz of the music during play) But people want to see this type of cricket more and more. 4 day county cricket was/is dying on its arse. I appreciate the skills, but I don't want to go through a final day. Where the result is not in much doubt. Bore draw being an example. If I remember rightly ( and certainly not sure) I think it was New Zealand. Who embarked on the let's give it a go style and were prepared to do or die so to speak. (Sporting declarations) Look at how the crowds react. It's so exciting. Don't get me wrong. We've seen some wonderful backs to the wall stuff and amazing comebacks. But as Stokes said to Baistow. Go out and do your stuff. Not do what others ask. Stifling his natural game.
I was there yesterday top. Oh up there with the best days of test cricket I’ve seen. Certainly the loudest I’ve ever heard Headingley when Jonny brought up his tonne.
In the late nineties it was Australia who suddenly increased faster scoring rates around 4 or 5 regularly in test matches. Hayden, Ponting and Gilchrist always seemed to play their natural game and score at much higher rates than normal. Until now. the likes of Buttler, Stokes and Bairstow weren’t encouraged to play their normal way, but is this a new age ?
Spot on… Can you imagine Gilchrist being told to block ? Buttlers test career is over now but it’s white balls gain
Why thank you! Perhaps we should keep praising those that fail? That's if it makes them feel any better! You on the other hand seem willing to support and accept mediocrity.
Gutted for Overton but 97 is a right score on debut. Well done son! Lovely consoling hug from Bairstow.
YJB got me looking at the all time list of quickest double hundreds The record set by Astle against us will be hard to beat. https://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/content/records/284135.html
Brilliant morning of test cricket. Well, more of a hybrid version than pure test cricket in the old sense. I like this new version and it’s being played with terrific spirit by both teams.
Not at all. I’m as critical as anyone else on highly paid sports people who don’t put the effort in. I just wouldn’t use such base and extremely derogatory language as you.
not seen morning session but gutted for overton tms said only 1 english player has scored a 100 and taken a wicket on debut, wg grace!
That would have been Brill to be the only person to have shared that record. Even more gutted for him now!
We'll win the test, we'll win the test. With Pottsy and his swing. The rain break did us the world of good.
