I remember watching Euro 96 but at that time my football knowledge was idolising Shearer & copying his one armed goal celebration around the playground!

Didn’t even Venables get stick though? I’ve seen stuff since where Shearer talks about the dogs abuse he got for standing by Shearer when he didn’t score for England for well over a year pre-tournament. Didn’t we also fortunately scrape past Spain & the fans were on his back?

Southgate’s played it loads. Played it all through the 2018 World Cup & parts of Euro 2020/21.

I think Hoddle also played it.

"A manager whose negative approach has led to losing in the knockout stage of major tournaments in the same way repeatedly."

As opposed to going out in the group stage or not qualifying at all... repeatedly.

No the fans weren't.on his back dont know where you've got that from. Spain were a top side who we beat on penalties in front.of euphoric fans. Probably one.of the few times we've beaten anyone on penalties.

I think we maybe under estimated Spain that day in '96, and it nearly cost us. And Id say we got a bit lucky as well with one of their disallowed goals.
But they/Spain hadn't looked much kop up to that point in their group games, and we had just hammered Holland. ;)
