    Under Southgate
That's not really telling the story, in competitive football under Southgate..
we haven't played Argentina, Portugal or Brazil in Competitive games, of the 7 of the top 10 we have played it looks like this..

    In win/draw/loss terms W D L

    France 0 0 1

    Belgium 1 0 3

    Netherlands 0 0 1

    Spain 1 0 1

    Italy 2 2 1

    Croatia 2 1 1

    Germany 1 2 0

We've been gaffered by Belgium 3 times and won 1, Netherlands won our only game, France won our only game ( after Kane missed a pen)
We are 1 each with Spain, and are now in front of Italy, Croatia and Germany.

Ok I couldn't resist this, seeing as we've played Belgium tonight. This game brings back so many good memories for me, when I think back to World cup '90 (in Italy).
It was on Tuesday the 26th of June.. my 19th birthday. :D

When I say the top 10, it means the top 10 when we actually played them bud, not current. Italy were about 12th at one point, rightly so, because theyve been crap. Hence the reason they didnt even qualify for the world cup yet still beat us to the Euros. Germany & Netherlands have been well off it too. Personally I just think we've had missed opportunities. I actually think we played quite well against France when Kane missed the penalty but that was the exception rather than the rule imo.
Not sure if this is 100% up to date or accurate but it's definitely something similar to this. I expect Portugal to rise steadily because they've a cracking line up now so I reckon they'll be back in contention

Italy were seeded second behind Belgium for the 2020 Euro's, England third. They had a 100% group stage record and beat No1 seed Belgium and Spain en route to the final... not a team to write off.
The table you have shown (I think) is not purely competitive games but includes friendlies.

You mean you want them to act more like the failures of the past generations?

Weren’t Italy also on something like a 20 game unbeaten run when we played them in the final?

That’s a very nicer version of what Barton said the other week.
On the flip side though, members of the ‘golden generation’ and players from either side have since admitted there was a fear element when playing for England as they were worried about getting slaughtered by the press.
The relationship with the media now is much healthier and some of that credit does have to go to Southgate.

Decent article here by Phil McNulty.

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/68668152

"This may be Southgate's farewell as England manager. Win or lose, very few international managers get a fifth tournament without winning any of the previous four. And if England are triumphant Southgate may even feel his work is done.

What is certain, given the talent England have and the experience of major tournaments boasted by so many of the squad, is that coming up short once more cannot be painted as anything other than desperate disappointment - and arguably failure.
Euro 2024 is now the time for England to deliver. And, in Germany, they can"
