Probably not the same instance as you're thinking of, but Hammill said on Undr the Cosh that the players did that once under Morais, they went against orders at home to Brentford, we won 2-0 and Morais took all the credit. He sort of suggested that it's the reason we essentially downed tools vs Derby in tbe last game (Hammill aside).

Shots on targets don't always tell the full story. They had one on target that didn't go in which was straight at the keeper. Our chances with Foden, Kane and Rice were all better despite not being a goal.

Slovakia stunk the game out more than anyone we've faced so far. Other nations parked the bus, this one went beyond that with the sportsmanship. It's amazing they finished with 11 on the pitch.

Only 7 other countries on our continent are going to experience the quarter finals. We should try and enjoy it.

You are right of course. England are the team everyone are fearing.

Then he will be no different to every other England manager apart from Sir Alf. He will be on a par with what Bobby Robson, El Tel and all the others won.

You're spot on about this. Perhaps some of Southgates fear is from the ridiculous expectations we have.

Honestly, are you married to his sister or summat?

Your defence of him is bizarre, wind up merchant level stuff

Without going through all the thread we were by miles the better side but caught out by a rare attack from Slovakia. We couldn't afford to give another goal away so it was always going to be cagey. Deserved it in the end.

Yes, but the football under those three was a joy to watch. Its a bit like comparing Danny Wilson to Neil Collins. Neither actually won any trophies but it was a pleasure to see Wilsons team in action. Have you honestly enjoyed watching these 4 England performances?

He’s had about 35 caps now & never done anything of note in an England shirt. This clamour to have the team built round him is bizarre. He’s very fortunate to start. It can only be based on club form.

In all fairness that’s a very generous assessment of the match!

Buy a mirror and repeat what you've written in this thread right into your own eyes. That's who you are. That's what the rest of us have to deal with. It's not OK.

Of course its based on club form, thats how you get into England team isn’t it?…Southgate should at least get the best out of the player…. Foden is our equivalent of Germanys Masiala and they seem to get the best out of him btw

I loved Bobby Robson, but even he had one stinker of a tournament. Euro 88 was absolutely catastrophic.

Not particularly no. Plenty to work on but it's not all on Southgate. The guys on six figures salaries need to take some responsibility as well.

The group stage was like pre season. Guys who haven't played much together for a while trying to get up to speed and click.

As the competition goes on I would expect us to gel more. Tonight might be a wake up call. I think today was the best we've played so far if we are looking at chances created.

One of the worst England matches I’ve watched and I’ve seen a few now. The tactical decisions throughout were baffling. Just because Bellingham scored a worldie, doesn’t really change much. Southgate was 2 minutes from not having a job.

I hope we aren’t as bad in the next round against Switzerland because they’ll batter us. Palmer should start.

Watch the group games of Italia 90...
Watch an appalling Belgium side almost take us to penalties...
Watch Cameroon take us to pieces.

Agreed (although we arguably deserved to beat the Dutch). Yet that tournament will live with many of us forever. So many iconic moments, and not just from England.

Edit - also, were Belgium that bad? Enzo Scifo, Jan Ceulemans, Michel Preud'Homme were all world class.

Tonight was an iconic moment. As big as any of those in our memories. We scored with an overhead kick in the 96th minute. That's going to live forever. And if we win it...
