I think it's great that there are so many young players in the squad. However what comes with that is lack of experience and often some poor decision making on the pitch. We saw that from several players especially Palmer yesterday. Bodes well for the future. However as a squad we don't look ready for a major tournament. Im still unsure if Southgate can get the best from individual players. Defence looks weak and disorganised and I don't think they know what the best line up is. As for up front, if it aint Kane then im not sure we have a back up capable. Midfield is awesome but what is the starting line up. There doesn't seem to have been an established 4. Trent has dabbled there, Is it Rice and Bellingham + 2? Im not sure where he sees things. Knowing Southgate he will dismantle the creative side of the midfield to protect the back 4. But I hope I am totally wrong.
We lost because the reserve keeper got beat at his near post which no keeper should. We had to deal with Stones going off with the latest in his long run of injuries and we hope he will be OK. Bellingham to come back. Kane taken off because we've bigger fish to fry. Saka given a rest on the bench. The squad numbers give a strong indication to the team a week on Sunday. 1 Jordan Pickford 2 Kyle Walker 3 Luke Shaw 4 Declan Rice 5 John Stones 6 Marc Guehi 7 Bukayo Saka 8 Trent Alexander-Arnold 9 Harry Kane 10 Jude Bellingham 11 Phil Foden 12 Kieran Trippier 13 Aaron Ramsdale 14 Ezri Konsa 15 Lewis Dunk 16 Conor Gallagher 17 Ivan Toney 18 Anthony Gordon 19 Ollie Watkins 20 Jarrod Bowen 21 Eberechi Eze 22 Joe Gomez 23 Dean Henderson 24 Cole Palmer 25 Adam Wharton 26 Kobbie Mainoo
Bowen deserves his chance although Grealish is the master of winning free kicks and csn play exciting football. He'll get another chance amd I commend Southgate for picking on current form.
I'm a fan of picking on form, but I think Jack Grealish is a unique player and offers something a bit different, probably not worth a start but can certainly come on when the game is into its final 1/4.
Really don't see why people are rating Mainoo, he's young and you'd think will improve but he looked like a kid trying to play in an adults game, United have been ***** so easy to stand out in that lot, he doesn't look anywhere near the world beater yet like some are making out.
Don’t agree, think mainoo is very good now and will be outstanding. That said, I think Adam Wharton is better.
I think most of the pundits have got it right today, to be honest. They're not going over board, and they aren't taking this match against Iceland too seriously. I had to laugh at Stuart Pearce though when talking about Grealish. Saying it's disappointing that fans say we need him in matches like that, because hes good at going to the ground and winning free kicks!.
Mainoo’s a lovely footballer but he’s pretty useless defensively right now. Man Utd were much better in the last couple of league games & cup final where he played further forward. If we’re going to play an attack minded midfielder alongside Rice then we might as well play a better one in Bellingham than either Mainoo or Gallagher. Otherwise stick Wharton in there.
Remember when we also lost a pre tournament friendly at Wembley (it was 1-2 against Uruguay), just before Italia '90. And as our time in that tournament showed, losing a home friendly proved nothing!. Frank LaBoef even said it as well, that his French team had a disappointing friendly build up to them hosting France '98. And they went on to win it after all lol.
Without sounding patronising, our 'second' team should still beat Iceland. Especially when players like Maddison, Grealish, Rashford, Maguire, Phillips, Henderson, Solanke, Elliott and soooo many more aren't even in the squad.
You've got to be careful though Frog when saying that, because it will obviously get called English arrogance or ignorance, etc. I think the same, that if it was a Qualifying group game, we would have been at full strength, and surely the result would have been better!.
Anyway, I forgot to put the brilliant match highlights up lol. And hey, I'm starting to like seeing us play in all white more now, with the navy blue trim.
Yes I agree I do think result would have been different had it been a meaningful game mate, just the issue for me is the confidence in Southgate is already low. Dont want more pressure on players now due to poor performances and grumblings from our fans though hopefully there will be a 2018 buzz around us again. Fingers crossed
