I'm in favour of leaving, but this thread is awful. You're doing your argument a disservice to post a quote from over 60 years ago, out of blind patriotism. It's the same kind of logic that means Americans have to put up with school shootings because of a document written in the 18th century. Do some research. Understand the facts on both side of the argument. Then make up your mind. This is far too important to be decided by quotes and pictures of Churchill.
It's a comment that was made 63 years ago. A lot has changed since then. Irrespective of his political views, what he did in relation to the miners or what his involvement with the Gallipoli campaign was with all due respect he won't be influencing me in how I vote in the coming referendum.
No, my reference to the Baath party was in relation to Galloway. I was just observing that I found some of the responses in this post ironic.
Without particularly wanting to get into debating any of what you say as it's futile my point was that Churchill's comments from 60 odd years ago are irrelevant to today. Regardless of what I might think of him and his actions.
Why should we take any notice of a man who sent troops in to sort out strikers? World War 2 apart, he did nothing for the working people of Britain.
Re: Why should we take any notice Exactly, he was a man for the war period, he unified the nation in dire times when even the royal family were throwing their hat in with Hitler. Without him we may all be speaking German now. But he was never going to last long after the war, by then his moment had gone. Let's not decry him for saving the nation that's a bit harsh. Yes he was from an old aristocratic family who looked down on the working class as was the norm at that time with such people. Hopefully most of that nonsense has gone now. Anyway he's part of the British history now, nothing can erase that. I think we need to stop looking back in history and selecting people we don't like and blaming them for all the evils in this world. I saw too much of that in South Africa where still the blacks blame apartheid for their poor economy, unemployment, etc. Even though they have been in power for over 20 years now.
My comments weren't aimed at you in particular, and I'd say that his comments are just as relevant, if not more so, than they were when first said.
The context is far different than then. Back then we still had delusions of grandeur and now we just have the grandeur of delusions.
