And what if we like Oldham with Micah Richards think we are sitting on a good few million from a sell on, only for the player to run down their contract to leave for nothing and so their previous club doesn't see anything?

thats interesting - what happens in sell on clauses when the club sells on but also gets a player in exchange?

eg stones goes for £30 million we get 20 % = £6 million
or stones goes for £10 million + a player = what do we get? just 20% of the £10 million or do they do some maths and take into account the value of the other player?

Yes, that's exactly what they would do. And as it's clear that Everton are valuing Stones at £30m+ it would be difficult for them to try to talk down the value of any player they get as part of this deal.

I think it is the full value of the transfer, so say £26m cash plus victor moses valued at £10m so total value £36m. So we could expect anything between 3.6 to 7.2m depending on the percentage

Surely we will only get a percentage on up value. We can't ask Everton to pay a percentage on the 2/3 million they have already paid us ?

No, we get how ever much the sell on clause is worth but in different stages
