FA Cup awaydays.....

Liverpool away. Simply because I went to the game in a car of 4 Liverpool fans!

When I joined them after the game and we set off back home, my phone was going bonkers. Pinging with messages and calls from well wishes. Eventually the driver, by this stage a little ‘tetchy’ said “ if you don’t turn that ******* phone off it’s going out the ******* window and you will be ******* following it.”
I looked around the car for support from my fellow passengers - just received a lot of frosty looks- and turned the phone off.

Luckily for them I then spent the next two hours explaining (in some detail) why we’d beaten them.

Happy days.

 

I remember more of the other two games, the one that gott called off for fog the stewards charged Hoggy a tenner to park the bus in the car park and then tapped on the window to tell him that the game had been called off!

 

Yeah Enfield away was like stepping into another universe.

For the way we were treated both outside and inside the ground.

For the weird stadium.

For how many had bothered to go.

But not for good old Ronnie playing his part in making the difference.

Bromsgrove - On the pitch and my old man would have killed me if he saw or knew
Man United - 2-2 Should have been a pen but my mate Scott Jones wouldn’t have been able to tell me the story for the last 25 years.

 

I loved the 3-1 away win at Rochdale, November 1971, as it was the first one I'd seen. However, I also loved the wins at Chester, Rotherham & Enfield (White Hart Lane) during the FA CUP run of 1980/81. The best were undoubtably were the draws at Tottenham & Manchester United in 1998 and the victory at Liverpool in 2008.

 

Worst for me was Marine

 

Good call, true to form, me and my dad were in with the home fans and at the end they were all shaking our hands and telling us that the only team they'd seen better than us that season was Liverpool.

 

Have to agree! I reckon that end held 8,000+ and it was chocabloc

 

Was it just my imagination but didn’t we match Boro blow for blow or is it me being biased?

 

After 20.mins we played them off the park, so to speak. They were lucky to win

 

My very 1st away day was January 1964 v Scunthorpe. Then in what was Division 2. The pitch was devoid of grass. We were 2-0 down with 10 minutes left and managed to salvage a 2-2 draw. We beat them in the replay and after beating Bury again 2nd tier got a home tie against the cup holders Manchester United. That is where the dream ended losing 4-0.

I saw all 6 cup games that season. My relationship with the club was born.

 

This was my first one as well. I know we were by the corner flag and I may have been on top of that concrete structure where the St John’s guys used to be. Great result taking them back for a replay. I was actually a bit overawed by their big stands, this being the Old Show Ground. Loved the fact that they had a left back called Jack Brownsword who was a penalty expert.
I also saw the whole of that cup run and what a thrill it was to see Man Utd play at Oakwell.

 

1-1 at Old Trafford

 

Rochdale away via an antique train, several centuries ago in a blizzard. A brace from big Winnie, and a piledriver from Jimmy Seal into the top corner from 187 yards out, in a 3-1 win. On the way back to the station after the match we had to evade a mini which was sliding down the road upside down on its roof in the snow. A fine day out.

 

Leicester city in 69.Drew 1 - 1 at home & gave it a right go at Filbert Street but lost 2 - 1.Leicester went on to the cup final & lost to Man City.

I was there as a young 'un. Seem to remember we played in their away kit ?

 

Enfield away was my best, Marine was the worst though Spinksy was funny on the bins outside the away dressing room hurling abuse through the open window

 

I was at the Rochdale game. Seemed so much more exciting back then!
