There are islands around our coast that may have never been inhabited, but we don't feel the need to set foot on em to claim that they are ours. Why there is a referendum beats me cos its obvious which way the vote is going to go.
I think the whole situation is crazy to be honest and while I understand the situation our government are in I question our right to an island over 7000 miles away.
It's an awkward situation but lets not forget the islanders are the most important people involved, it is their home. If, as seems likely, they want to remain resolutely British, I don't think there's much that can be done without provoking major diplomatic issues. Similar to Gibralter without the mitigating factors of oil.
it will be an interesting referendum as there are quite a few argentinians live there too without the vote Argentina are stopping supply ships from using any of there of there allies ports. Even with the vote, any ship that visits the Falklands will still be not allowed to dock. But the Islanders are wanting there voice heard. The islanders are saying its our oil and we want to be the ones to benefit from any future sales. It just seems Argentina are trying to bully there little neighbour, and if things escalate theres a serious threat of another war there.
Or maybe youll vote Labour back in and in another 12 years the country will be fooked again and cons will have to sort it out again. like the last 60 years or so of UK Elections
Seem to remember the country being pretty knackered in 1997, not to mention all the foundations having been laid by Thatcherism and Reaganomics for everything that's happening now. The problem with New Labour is they behaved too much like the Tories. "Didn't save money to fix the roof when the weather was good"...There wasn't a flippin roof when Labour got in!
spot on ark.. if the tories were that good they wouldnt have got booted out in 97.....they only stayed in power because labour were fukin useless in opposition and couldnt get their act together,,bit like they are with new anti immigration milliband at the helm. end of the day neither of them can sort the country out, both leave it in a mess when the get kicked out.
The oil is not an issue for either Argentina or the Falkland Islanders,Argentinas claim and the Islanders wish to remain British predate any thoughts of oil discovery.I recently read a book of the Falklands war, written using the Argentinian soldiers viewpoint, one thing that shocked them was that they weren't welcomed as liberators, and the Malvinas wasn't the little bit of Argentina they had been taught from Children to believe. My own opinion is that human rights in the 21st century should prompt the UN to accept that only the wishes of the Islanders count.
