Played for Donny Rovers as well. At one game the ball was really dark brown in colour. Charlie ran over to where the kids enclosure was to take the throw. He picked the ball up and made a shaking motion with his hands. With a big grin on his face, he said to us young 'ins in the pen " just shekkin it to mek sure there's no milk in it."!!! He then ran back into the Rovers box splitting his sides. Had the pleasure of meeting him at a Duke of Edinburgh Awards presentation night many years later. He was guest of honour. In his opening welcome address he said " when I knew this night 'wor for kids I had no hesitation in accepting. I love kids me. Mindst you 'a couldn't eyt a full 'un." Took great delight in taking the rise out of himself and as a result, everyone I knew loved Charlie. Never ever resorted to crudity to make people laugh. A truly great character.
My Mrs is certainly no teacake, but... I did once convince her that Elton John was Mapplewell born and bred, still lived there and was a regular in Eastfield Arms. Not quite sure this is over relevant to this thread mind. Though there's plenty from town who've had lead roles on a flagship programme on BBC1 (Crimewatch) if that redeems me.
Stan Richards was a regular drinker in the Grey Horse, an Old Town pub. He wouldn't travel there from New Lodge would he?
