It must be that if anything. I have no recollection of anyone taking coal in to throw during the strike
No the area between the ponte and the brewery stand was just a hill with shale on it when I first went, I think it got tarted up and the terracing added when we got promotion to the 3rd division - though that was before the miners strike so people wouldnt have been throwing shale from there in those days
Yes I half remember they added a bit there.. long time ago.. doubt it was coal or shale before they did that bit up(??)... I bet it was similar to how back of ponty was .. Any pics?
Back end of 60s 65ish it was black shale if memory serves me right you used to climb it to watch the football being played on the old co'op ground at times it was more interesting that what was being served up in Oakwell ...lol .. i would have been about 9 so thats 1965 I think it was 69 70 season they concreted it fully up to that point I'm sure there was about 20 rows of concrete with barriers and rest was just black shale
To be honest, old mate, I always thought the concreting of the terracing on the Spion Kop to the very top and other areas of the ground was done in the Summer of 1979 after we'd won promotion. Then again, my memory's not what it was.
Yes thats my memory as well. The kop was definitely done after 69/70 as I remember it as a shale hill and I didnt go until the 70/71 season. I am fairly sure it was done to celebrate promotion as well. I remember going into the brewery stand one season and it had all been done and I am 95% sure it was the summer after promotion from the 4th. it wasn't before then because I was late getting in to the promotion clinching game v Grimsby and stood on the bit between the ponte and brewery behind the corner flag under the floodlight and I am sure at the back where we were standing it was shale then.
I recall returning home from France at the start of the 1979/80 and was pleased to see that, concreted terracing had been constructed on the Kop.
You may well be right the memory isnt as good these days, i remember the shale ..bet somebody at the club could answer or find out the answer ...where's whitey all righty when you need him...lol
