Dave Spikey was quality when I saw him about 5yrs ago. Jason Manford, Jimmy Carr also had me in stitches. Bob Monkhouse did some great stand up.
I saw Billy Connolly at Civic, his first line was "if anybody is easily offended I suggest you may like to leave" Everybody at the time knew what his act was like but I saw 4 women get up and leave.
John Shuttleworth Julian Clarey Frankie Howerd They are the only ones I have seen live and John Shuttleworth was the best of them.
I didn't ever see that side of him.All I saw was a very hard working ex miner who didn't have to be blue to make people laugh.I once saw him 5 times in one week.I enjoyed the 5 show as much as the 1st.
My physique was somewhat different in those days, old mate. Not as, err, substantial. I had a full head of hair, too! Ah, the memories.
The Mike Harding shows at the Civic were some of the funniest I have ever seen. His stories and songs are still brilliant. Strangeways Hotel, Ooh Ar Sylveste etc. I think the Red Specs tour show he did was the best one. Billy Connelly was superb too, the first time I saw him I could hardly understand whathe said , his accent was that strong, but when he came to Civic I had been listening to his LP`s so I was more attuned to it !
I thought the likes of Connolly & Harding were a breath of fresh air at the time. Most of the comedians simply just stood on a stage and told joke after joke, usually poorly and unfunny.
Stewart Lee, Frank Skinner and Sean Hughes (when he used to be good!). Would love to see Louis CK and Bill Hicks (if he wasn't dead)
