Winnall’s second against Walsall in the play-offs, O’Connell’s brace against Sheff Utd at Oakwell circa 1995 and probably Kitch’s goal against Wednesday for a recent pick. Reds goals I went mental for at the time. In general terms - Bergkamp at the World Cup against Argentina, Batistuta against Man Utd in the Champions League and Gazza scored a string of FA Cup goals in 1991 that culminated in that extraordinary free-kick at Wembley.
Conor against Leeds. Howard against Liverpool. Owen v Argentina. Beckham v Greece. Oh and COLLYMORE CLOSING IN.
1970’s: Alastair Millar free kicks vs Port Vale and away at Doncaster, Tommy Graham 18 yard header (away at Vale?) 1980’s: Glavin at Swillsboro, Aylott vs Brighton, Banks vs Cardiff in the cup (which of the last two was the furthest out?) 1990’s: Marcelle vs Bradford, Barnard vs Hudds, Jones second vs ManUtd 2000’s: Odejayi vs Chelsea, JCR vs Doncaster, Devaney at Plymouth 2010’s: Davies vs Leeds, Hammill’s two at Wembley vs Oxford and Millwall 2020’s: Dike vs Birmingham, Odour vs Brentford, Kitching vs Washday
I'd probably give a different answer each time i was asked this question. First one that came to mind today was Nelinho's swerver with the outside of the foot in 1978. For Barnsley, I still class the hit by Neil Thompson v Stoke in Sep 1996 as the purest strike of a ball I've seen. If the stanchion wasn't there it would still be going. Also have fond memories of Steve Cooper scoring a 35 yard chip over Tony Norman on Easter Monday 1989, a 3-0 win v Sunderland. Aylott v Man City, Ward v Spurs, could go on for a while here!!
Dalian Atkinson for villa v Wimbledon (was voted goal of the season I think) And JCR that breakaway from a corner at Hillsborough
Bergkamp vs Argentina just sublime, scored 2 at Leicester, the Newcastle away goal and a couple against us, could fill a section on his own, probably cleverest player I've seen in the flesh.
Isiah Rankin at home to Brentford to keep us safe from dropping into division 4, went absolutely bonkers mental.
Proper niche one but Kevin Long at Oldham under Lee Johnson. Think we'd lost 8 on the bounce and would've gone bottom if we didn't win. Absolutely freezing end of November, couple weeks after we lost at Altrincham, think only 500 odd Reds travelled with most probably expecting it to be called off. Went 1-0 up, battered them but couldn't get a second and they equalised quite late on. Then Kevin Long popped up in the 90th minute with a winner - keeper saved an initial effort from a free kick and he battered in the rebound. I just remember going mental with my old man, who passed away last summer. I miss going to games with him a lot. We usually lost when he went which made this one even better! We've been blessed with many brilliant goals and late/memorable winners but that one sticks out for me for some reason.
A lot of my favourites have been mentioned but I don't think anyone's picked Julian Joachim and Owen Archdeacon in the same FA Cup replay in 1992/93
Two Millwall knuckleheads barged through the ticket cue prior to the game, swearing and looking for a scrap. When Hammill danced through their defence to stick in that goal it was soooo sweet. Great goal.
In fact If I remember rightly there was a decent goal to put us 2-0 up at Filbert Street. Clearance controlled on the chest and volleyed over the keeper.
