Gerrard's probably my favourite English player in the time i've been watching football (96 onwards). From about 2004 to 2010 he was incredible, the cup final goal against West Ham was unbelievable, he'd been down with cramp only a minute before. Loads of others I could name, Zidane, Nedved, Henry, Raul, Messi, Shearer are a few
Matt Le Tissier for me. I don't think he knew how to score an ordinary goal. Current crop it would be Bale for similar reason.
British. Without a doubt, Gazza, genius with a football. Stupid arse in the real world, but as a footballer unsurpassed in my eyes. Special mentions to Le Tissier, Hoddle and Colin Bell. Overseas players. Pele, greatest player I ever saw. Then there was Zico, Socrates, Rivellino, Jairzinho (?), Cryuff, Koeman, Maradona and Marco Gentile. Honourable mention must go to Ces Podd, he is the first Black player I can recall playing at Oakwell, I am certain there will have been some before him while I have been watching the Reds, but he stands out.
Wish he hadn't chosen us as the first team to score against, though! My picks, currently Messi, without a doubt. Also have a lot of respect for Scholes. In the past, best player I ever saw live was Ruud Gullit. Loved watching Bryan Robson, Gazza, Cantona and Stuart Pearce - all of them always fully committed to the cause.
Current - Messi England - Lineker Past - Socrates Foreign player having biggest impact on domestic football - torn between Zola and Cantona
Stuart Pearce Eddie Gray At the moment Bale is amazing. I think he has had a bad press over his "diving".
England Bobby Moore Scotland Dennis Law Ireland George Best not necessarily in that order first reserve Jimmy Greaves
George Best,Gazza, The 2 Bobby's Charlton and Moore, Pele.....And I hate to say it...Maradona(for everything but the handball goal.....Now, Messi, Ronaldo,Rooney and Stevie G........
As a kid, Michael Owen for me - a great player and seems a great guy. One of the few players that can get you a goal out of nothing, just a shame about all the injuries. Don't like the way that most view him today either - would still be scoring goals imo given half a chance but he's probably playing for the wrong club at present. Also, might seem a strange choice but John Arne Riise is my type of player - almost all his goals are absolute screamers http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=onlcgYxlnzw I'd be happy with that collection I would consider Zinedine Zidane to be the most gifted player ever though.
English - Stuart Pearce - made the best of limited natural ability Foreign - Terry Henry - silky smooth classy
