    Theres a shop in Whitby that sells all the old type of sweets ( spice).

    That McGowans toffee rattled the memory stick

    I must have been about 7 or 8 and were walking to school at top a doderth , shop opposite coop had a box wi some of that toffee in the window, wi were late for school and got STICK . After school we all run home and pestered for money and ran back for that toffee . First sweets that I had ever seen on show in a shop window. 1947/8 and talk about snow now... that one was a winter 3/4ft drifts and SHORT trousers... by my legs got chapped that year...

    Going for Valentines day & reading this thread has made me crave old fashioned spice. Best olde worlde spice shoppe is in Howarth

    Butter dainties, nobody seems to recall ever having them apart from me....Toffee wrapped with Chocolate inside, bloody lovely they were....Wished i'd some now.
