The ITV theme tune for France '98 was quality.

    Good question!

First one i saw was Espana 82. (I was 7). Mexico 86 was memorable just for the spectacular goals at altitude and coincided with starting to visit Oakwell regularly.

The best by far though was Italia 90. The BBC music, the stadia that looked so modern. The time games were on and the eventual rollercoaster of getting so close. But Englands progress doesn't make a world cup for me. It's the host.

France was ok but Japan/Korea I really enjoyed for seeing the progress of the hosts. Germany was pretty crap but the worst by far was South Africa.

My instinct is Brazil will be awful (if the grounds ever get signed off as safe!) or the last hurrah before a decade of world cup apathy as Russia and Qatar host a very special tournament.

I remember Italia '90 by this song:

I don't think I've heard this song for more than twenty years, and I was only seven in 1990 and didn't even speak English at all, but I can still remember the lyrics from the refrain! I'm sure that this song used to sound somehow more catchy and a bit faster, but I think it's a pretty good theme tune even after all these years.

If only Gazza had gone to a proper club with a proper manager like Man U instead of Spurs...

End of thread. Even those of us not born back then should see it as our favourite world cup due to it being our only win. Special mentions for....

Italia 90: Gazza, two good football tunes and Roger Milla.

USA 94: We weren't there so avoided the hype of how we can win it when we all knew we couldn't.

France 98: Awesome event. That squad France won with is my favourite ever team. If all the best world cup teams ever in their prime got to play eachother it would give the Brazil team of the 70s a game.

1990 is my personal favourite, because it was my first and England did well. Plus, Gazza is probably my all time footballing hero (aside from Reds legends that is)

Honourable mention for 2002 though also. Firstly, I was at Uni at the time so one of the most enjoyable years of my life anyway. Also, it was the only World Cup where I've genuinely, hand on heart, heart and head, believed that we were going to win it. And but for a jammy Ronadinho goal I think we probably would have done.

82 England Brian Robson goal after 15 seconds against France went out without losing a game. Brazil vs Italy an absolute classic Rossi and Socrates.
