Not many will in a war zone at that age whereas fireman will have to go into burning buildings

We dont think we any more important than anybody else and certainly not the brave lads and lasses serving us in the military but when you sign a contract and set your life upto know when you are retiring and what you can afford to live on, you dont expect some banker gambling all the countrys money and we along with other hard working people of this country having to work longer so they can continue to do what they are terrible at. Its like your bank manager ringing you up and saying " now then, what about me doubling your payments each month and extending your payment period and then were going to halve the value of your house. Who would stand for that. Mr brandon lewis (fire minister) is calling us allsorts in the week hes got a 9k payrise in the austeria times. They also want us to run into peoples burning homes carrying breathing apparatus on our backs when were 60, all well u may say but i wouldnt want my family waiting on a old codger climbing ladders to rescue them.
We really and that i mean all of us have to make a stand at some point against this vile, upper class set of self serving pigs and stand up for what we believe and for what we think is right.
United we stand and all that.....

You would expect them to fight to protect their pensions because they have the best public sector pensions going, but they will still be lot better off than most even if they're changed.

Our pension are self sufficient. I pay just short of £300 a month. I take home £1400 a month. I reckon im paying more than most. The argument that we still get a good pension is just irrelevant. I know lets all turn over and let that set of millionnaires do us dry.

Firstly - for the hard of thinking nothing below indicates whether i have an opinion - I've tried to work this out logically and calculate. All numbers are rounded but I think materially ball park

As usual I'm happy to be corrected if wrong. ;-)

Normal firefighters salary £28200 (before overtime etc)
    Pension contribution: £320
Pension contribution net of tax £260

    Std. Take home £1575

Total Pension contribution over 40 years: £153,000
Total impact over 40 year career (assumed no inflation for simplicity, etc) £125,000

Pension on retirement (at 60) £19200 plus state pension £5700

Net take home benefit of firefighter pension £13,900 or £1150 per month.
Total "take home" pension (firefighter plus state) per month £1600

Total time to recover pension contributions (with no accounting for interest) 9 years.
Total life expectancy of fire fighter post retirement ?

For comparison a standard annuity based pension of £320 per month contribution employee and £320 per month Employer for 40 years - £875 per month.

Total take home from above scheme including state pension £1130.

Second comparison - Monthly contribution required in standard pension by both employee and employer to achieve same pension as firefighters pension: £575.

Like I said - I'm interested in understanding the real answer here.

If there's something wrong in my calcs let me know.

Whether they are money grabbing bastads or not looks like it depends on life expectancy which traditionally is low for firefighters because they used to breath in chemicals from dodgy foam in sofa's but I understand life expectancy is improving.

It really does amaze me that we have issues with honest hard working people who have finally drawn a line in the sand and said thats enough and nobody criticises this lunatic government giving themselves a well deserved pay rise whilst all of us are well and truly in the brown

It appears that most ex forces just roll over
They need to realise that in the real world people have a right to fight to maintain their standard of living
Thats not a bad thing even though the rich 5% of our country are getting even richer under this government
Nice if you can get it

Am I wrong in thinking then that on average a firemen over 40 with reasonable progression working 6 months a year ( 2days, 2 nights then 4 off) and take another job and still get around 30 k before overtime in their forties?
Hmmmm....if only the forces was as lucrative, and before anyone starts, never was a fan of ladders/heights, that's why I fix aircraft, ;)

    Life is full of choices
I would imagine your salary assumptions are correct
You omitted to add that they work 12 hour shifts
Puts a different perspective on your point
Not sure why working class ( yes we all are) want to bitch about others
I thought the tax cut of 50 to
    45%
Is what we need to worry about
