My first game was 8th March 1975. 1-1 draw with Crewe. Will be 50 years watching the Reds in March, a week after my 60th birthday.
I think so. We were certainly top of the live table when leading Leicester 2-1. Maybe we didn't actually go top properly until the beginning of 96-97.
My wife's 12 year old grandson is a Liverpool fan (they live in Selby) because his dad (who's from South Wales) is a Liverpool fan . However, he's only ever seen them at a couple of pre-season friendlies (apart from on the telly obviously). So I asked him the other day if he wanted to come with me to Oakwell and he was keen, might be another Barnsley fan in the making...
4th May 1982 vs Leicester (Lost 0-2). Mainly memorable as it was the night HMS Sheffield was sunk in the Falklands. And for a young lad on the way out saying "but Dad they might score yet!" and his Dad replying, "Son, they wouldn't score if they played all week"
I dont think I've ever been as scared as at Bradford away once. Bradford fans kicking s41t out of the coppers to get to our fans. Who were put in different sections of the ground due to the special arriving late. We'd gone in the car and were sat in the stand. Watching it kicking off. At least one Policeman being carried out on a stretcher.
I think it was Wylde who had us laughing our tits off. Goalie and the crowd thought a free kick had been awarded just outside the area to the opposition. So he rolled it out to take it. Wylde kicked it in tut net. Goal was given.
18th March 1978 at home v Huddersfield drew 1.1. Warnock and Pugh sent off for Reds. We had sh[t refs even then
We played Bradford City every season from 1969-70 to 1978-79, and there was always trouble, home and away. I remember going down to West Ham to watch the Reds in 1979 I think in the league cup, with the Hoyland Reds, and we pulled into the services behind a Bradford City coach, who were away at QPR, which was leaving. Or so we thought. It managed to swing round and pull in behind us. They piled off the bus with chains and bats. Some of our lads managed to gather up some stones and a volley of those sent them back to their bus. It was also bad at West Ham that night.
