I think my first game was a Central League game v Blackpool Reserves. Tony Waiters, who got one or two England caps was in goal for them. I think the score was 0-5. I was in the Boys enclosure at the cop end for the first Floodlit game v Bolton. that was 1962. I then saw all the games in the 1963/4 FA Cup run to the 5th round, when we lost 0-4 v Manchester United.
I also was at Upton Park, luckily I got a free ticket in seats, but can remember it being horrible place for away fans. Going on about Bradford again, they were our biggest game of season during that era, we never played the likes of Leeds, Wednesday or Sheff Utd. Some people think we have always had this rivalry with Sheffield clubs but when I first started watching reds we never played them unless it was in Sheffield county cup(friendlies really).
Their fans singing "Ee by gum. Ee by gum". Proper shitting missen there n'all. WHU my first venture to london 1976 lost 3-0 . (minibus full, me being the youngest 19. Not with Hoyland reds old outfit I'm guessing that Winchester tyke refers to. Dozen jumpers we went with)We were among their lot on the side, one of the worst views ever if I remember right, the front of the terracing below pitch level. Not daring to open us traps.
Hooky, dint some Barnsley fans get run on to pitch by WHU fans just before kick off?....nearly sure it was that game. A bloke told me that their fans did it every game to away fans down that side bit you on about. Little Anton Otulakowski played for us that day before West Ham signed him.
We went 1-0 up, with Johnny Evans scoring after a few minutes. Sadly, Barrow then scored three times, before Allen Bradbury pulled one back near the end. I remember walking back to our car with my Dad, wondering why there were so many people walking around, doing their shopping, as if they didn't realise the world had come to an end!
Can't remember fans getting chased onto pitch and tbh. I don't remember if we were given a section. I think we were scattered round the ground. Anton was quality that night if I remember rightly, possibly best player performance on the pitch. I'm trying to remember who the goalie was that night. On loan I think.?.
Don’t think we were given a section mate, I went with social club, think we took 5 buses which was right following back then. Wouldn’t it have been Springett in nets, might be wrong
Just found a whu line up and i may be a little confused. (So you may be right with Springett.) I Just seem to remember goalie having a stormer. (Even though we lost 3-0.) Could have been Mervyn Day that played out of his skin. Against us. Memory playing tricks lol.
Smithy was at that time, a future red lol, but yeah now he is an ex. And I recognised the blond wig on Nicky Law. I think for his experience and goalscoring instinct in those days, Roger Wylde was a very important and popular striker.
