I think we just have to accept that there are 3 things certain in life. .... death, taxes and Conan bairning about BFC.
Must be a hard life being so pessimistic all the time.

For every Martin Bullock there's probably 100 Mike Turners or Andy Evans.

People keep going on about Charlie Austin as if he proves the rule. Players like him at that level are like gold dust. As they are in Scotland. This Hemmings may turn out to be a replacement for Chris O'Grady and if he is I will hold my hands up. My initial thoughts are that he will be nothing like and I'm entitled to my opinion just like anyone else on here.

Just because I am in the minority doesn't make me wrong.

I agree with your point entirely CT. I would rather we took a chance on a lad like Hemmings than waste money on a waste of space like Frimpong but however we spin it he is a gamble, quite a big gamble. If he signs I will back him 100% as will most reds fans but like you say stumbling across players like Austin is very rare so while I will be keeping my fingers crossed he makes the adjustment and starts scoring for fun I know this is far from guaranteed.

It's not about being right or wrong. No one is right or wrong at this stage because the lad we've signed hasn't kicked a ball for us. It's about giving people a chance, it's about trusting the management team to sign decent players, it's about having a bit of dignity and not bairning all day long, every single day about absolutely everything that the football club you claim to support is doing. You're going to claim it promotes discussion, but it doesn't, it promotes hostility. When we've seen the lad play a dozen times we'll be able to discuss him, but we can't at the moment because none of us have seen him play. Even the Scottish lads on here hadn't heard of him. He's a player that's got under the radar, maybe that's because he's no good, but maybe we've found a gem. Why can't you wait and see before passing judgement?

There aren't 100 Mike Turners and Andy Evans for every Martin Bullock. There are in non-league football, but pro clubs don't sign them, they only sign the better ones. That doesn't mean it always works out, but the failure rates are nothing like you're claiming. Andy Evans and Mike Turner didn't work out, but both cost us nowt and would have been on very low wages. Andy Evans never made a league appearance for us, we brought him in, had a look and released him. And although we got him from Aberystwyth, he actually began his career at Cardiff and played a number of games for them as well as winning a Welsh under 21 cap. Mike Turner arrived after he finished Uni. He struggled, didn't play much, but the amount we spent on him was probably worth it for that goal at Ipswich.

2 failures then and successes in Sheridan and Bullock. For your figures to balance we need another 198 non-league signings that failed. I can think of Phil Gridelet, not great by any stretch of the imagination, but it was his injuries that screwed him up at Barnsley more than anything. He played a hell of a lot at Championship level for Southend. After that, I'm struggling. 2 successes and 3 failures from non-league signings. Pretty good success rate to say most of 'em cost us nowt. I'm sure there have been other non-league players in the time I've been watching, but I can't think of any and I know for a fact it's been nothing like the number of failures you're suggesting.

I know, just before my time, we signed Mick Butler from Worsbrough Bridge, who scored 57 goals from 120 appearances. I know another Barnsley lad, Geoff Horsefield, progressed from non-league to the Premiership. I know Chris Waddle, Les Ferdinand and Ian Wright all started out playing non-league. I know that, arguably, our best ever player, Ronnie Glavin, started his career at Partick Thistle. I know that our greatest ever captain, Neil Refearn, played 100 games for Lincoln and 46 for Donny. I know Ashley Ward and Craig Hignett played for Crewe in the 4th division. I know your argument holds no water at all and that you're doing everyone's nut in by constantly griping.
