For anyone who voted conservatives at the last election

The people who vote Tory are either selfish to the core and care only about themselves or thick as pig ****, either way they won't give a toss. They knew what he was when they voted for him, because let's face it there was enough stuff about him in the public domain before the election, sacked for lying more than once, kids all over the place some he admitted to some he didn't, affairs, financial issues, racist and homophobic comments etc etc. The only hope is that enough people who couldn't bring themselves to vote for either Johnson or Corbyn at the last election will vote for Starmer because the upper ranks of the Tory party is full of Johnson enablers so even if he goes the corruption lies and double standards will continue.

 

The problem with your argument in my opinion is that it implies that we must all be comfortable in accepting Johnson stays as PM. By saying there is no one else this is basically what you're saying. There are of course numerous people on the Tory front bench who would be a better alternative (and I despise 'em). E.g. Sunak, Javid, etc etc...
If you still maintain that there is no one capable of replacing a lazy, incompetent, shape-shifting liar after being presented with two alternatives then the only conclusion to be drawn is that you actually support Johnson as PM ( which is what some people in this thread suspect anyway by the looks). Nothing wrong with that if that's what you think - its your opinion - but logically that must be the case.

I can categorically confirm I do not in any way support Johnson. I would prefer anyone but him.

I am very interested in history and the ins and out of political maneuvering. If Jonson is replaced then I am interested to find out who others think will replace him. You are the first to mention actual realistic possibilities. I agree that Sunak or Javid are possibilities. The question is would they be a better bet for the Conservatives than sticking with Boris. In the longer term Starmer might be an alternative but even staunch Labour supporters must have serious doubt about them even winning an election, though Boris is probably done enough to give them hope.

 

Johnson is a (politically) dead man walking.He has lost his backbenchers and somebody (ies) are obviously out to get him. Which probably means they have been garnering support for his replacement.
Can’t get excited about him being replaced though. Whoever it is that replaces him will be stronger because they will have a solid backing and will be as untainted by Johnson’s behaviour as possible.
Therefore they will have chance to rally the party before any election is due.
Also Johnson’s personal shortcomings would have been a hinderance to them at future elections.

It’s remarkable, but the reality is that he’s just doing what he needs to do to earn a favour in return.

I know all politicians sometimes do something for personal gain, but for this current government it appears to be their whole purpose.

Sunak or Javid have no chance in an election from the rank and file Tory membership. Truss is the most likely candidate from the current front bench, though Gove possibly still fancies his chances.

However; the reason most of us couldn’t come up with a successor to Johnson is that we’re ignorant of the possible candidates.

The problem is that this current vacuous government owes its power to the ERG, and that was built on the premise of getting Brexit done.

But now it’s done, do the ERG still have enough influence? Does the next Tory leader need to be a rabid Brexiteer, or will the 1922 committee wrestle power back?

I’d suggest that any leader chosen by the ERG to replace Johnson and carry on the same policies will have the disadvantage of carrying the stench of Johnson.

So the 1922 committee are likely to want to install someone vanilla to distance themselves from this shitshow and to protect their own seats and have a chance at the next election.

I can’t get enthused by Starmer but if he genuinely wants a chance at No10, he needs to call off the Labour dogs attacking Johnson and hope that Johnson can ride out this storm. The Tories won’t shirk from getting rid of him if they think he’s an electoral liability. They will then claim they are a new Govt/party for the 4th time!!

I don’t want to labour the point; but the average Tory party member is a 60 yr old Daily Mail reading housewife.
So whilst they are much more likely to elect a female leader than the ‘progressive’ socialists, there’s no way they’ll elect an ethnic leader. Not in my lifetime.

Likewise, their support in the country, a huge proportion of which is a little bit racist.

Whilst Zahawi does have some views that’ll appeal to their base, I can’t see it.
