I'm from Barnsley, and support Barnsley FC, but live and work in Sheffield.

My nickname at work is 'Ding'.

It's a ******* witch hunt. The Guardian have gone in and tried to catch out an old fella, to see if they can get him to use some inappropriate language and they've succeeded. And now everyone has gone potty about it. It's ridiculous.

Rightly there has been a hell of a lot of controversy over a player who raped a woman coming back in to football. But that is a different world to what MacKay did. What he said was wrong, I think the fella is a lovely person, but he's allowed to work for a living. Whelan is allowed to hire him and he's allowed to discuss what was in those texts without the world jumping on his back if he says a word out of tune.

Inappropriate language is in common parlance. If you don't accept that fact you're lying to yourself. That doesn't condone racism, it just understand the society we live in. Using inappropriate language doesn't make you racist. It's how you act towards people of different creeds, colours, religions, nationalities, sexes and sexualities that determines your prejudices not the words you call people. That's not to say we should have carte blanche to call people what we like, if you intend offence then you are offensive, but if you use words and stereotypes to describe people without wishing any offence at all you're just unfashionable, not prejudiced. Every nation on earth have words describe the people of different nations. Knowing them doesn't make you a bigot.

For what Dave Whelan really believes then read his BBC interview and let's hope that's the end of it. It won't be, but we can hope.

To answer your question, I don't think there's any difference. About time we stopped trying to find offence when none is intended. This kind of attitude led to what happened in Rotherham where the police wouldn't arrest paedophiles for fear of being labelled racist. It's ******* idiotic. Racism is abhorrent, words aren't. If you don't like the word, tell the person who said it and they won't say it again in your company if they have anything about them because most people aren't racist, they don't want to cause offence, they're just not up on which words are fashionable at the moment.
