Didn’t the council reject planning for it being a supermarket on the grounds it was too close to Tesco?
https://www.barnsleychronicle.com/article/7713/sainsburys-shelve-supermarket-plan no I’m wrong they pulled out. Shame, I like Sainsbury’s! Nearest one i suspect is Wadsley Bridge
Sainsbury’s shelved the plans because of costs and the business wasn’t performing too well. They’re still paying the lease for the building though. Didn’t help that it took a long time to get the planning approved (it had to go to the Secretary of State), and one of the conditions in the approval from the council was to make changes to Stairfoot roundabout. There are two in Wakefield. The nearest one close to Westgate Retail Park is probably just as close to Barnsley Town Centre as Sheffield.
I was a Black Bull regular too, though it lost it’s shine after poor Trev departed, then got worse still after Ashfield club shut and ‘those people’ adopted it as their new local. Plus The Keel never reopened, post first lockdown. There’s nowt left down there, when normal life resumes, unless you like kebab, coffee and Big Macs. Prefer John Smiths myself mind.
Was a regular on Saturday nights when big John did Karaoke. Trev was a reight guy, always good ale and not far for me to stumble home. Was gutted when they knocked it down. The Bull got me through a few tough years.
Bet we know each other then, been going in Since 1977/8. Last incumbents Daz and Karen were big reds fans.
Probably mainly went in on Saturdays and sang badly on Karaoke after a few too many. Lived just down road. Stopped going due to work, ended up doing too many weekends.
Just driven past the Tankersley lane site.... looks more than a hundred units to me... reminded me of one of those kids films where the fields get smashed apart by smoking diggers and large lorries. Was under the impression that was the yellow in the picture... I could be wrong though.
Here’s the plan for Hoyland West : The black striped area is what’s reserved for housing on that site.
Traffic chaos too by essentially closing off tankersley lane forcing all the tankersley and pilley traffic onto the bypass which already has massive queues
