You’re not punishing him though. He has wrongly been awarded the championship. The punishment to Hamilton and Mercedes right now is obscene and on a level over never seen in F1 before.

I don't disagree but the way it's played out will still make it feel like a punishment for him if they did. Its a absolute shambles. If they don't overturn it I expect legal challenges and threats to leave the sport from Mercedes.

I agree. If a striker is 20 yards offside and scores a goal that VAR dissalowed, has he been punished?

The difference is that the Race director had made the correct decision and relayed it to the teams, then after a conversation with Christian Horner extended the race by one lap to suit that participant, a bit like a ref blowing for full time and then starting again for three minutes because Fergie didn't like the result.

    Protest not upheld.

    Verstappen champion.

    Absolutely disgraceful.

    No. Because he was offside?

Max didn’t win the Championship today. He was awarded it incorrectly due to gross misconduct from the race officials.

He didn't extend the race though did he. He changed his mind which he does all the time. Both team principles were trying to influence him during the race.

FIA lose any remaining credibility, let them race is not a reason to ignore the rules.

it’s the wrong outcome and the wrong result - but it was never going to be upheld. What a complete **** up.

No his discretion does not cover this eventuality.

Agreed but entirely predictable. They were never going to go agaisnt themselves despite breaking their own rules. I'd be shocked if we don't see legal action as a result of this.
Part of me feels for Max while I'm sure he's happy he's won it will be forever tainted by the stink of the FIAs incompetence.

An impartial court, looking at the facts, will find Mercedes’ appeal valid and force the FIA to take action.

This isn’t finished today. The stewards had to make this decision but it isn’t going away anytime soon.

He effectively did extend the race...had the lapped cars unlap themselves as the rules state the race would be over because of the time taken to do it, by allowing only five to unlap he restarted a race that should have finished.

I haven't seen their reasoning, but the rules shown earlier are quite clear that he does not have that discretion...looks like Court now.
