In terms of trying to judge public opinion, and that’s no easy task when polls can be manipulated, but on the BBC website 122,000 disagree with the FIA’s decision to crown Max champion and 29,000 agree. That’s pretty wide.
Yep they went toe to toe with each, but he should be a runner up not a champion. Nicky Hayden and numerous other riders have won Moto GP titles without actually winning races. Most of the best riders had big accidents. Those champions never get held with much regard. Champions by default. What we saw today was someone winning a race and title unfairly. All supported and now promoted by the governing body. In any walk of life how is that fair?
In fairness it's a British news site talking about a British and foreign driver. I imagine if you did the same poll in Holland you'd get the opposite result.
That's why it's so surprising hearing Hill roll over on this. He's on a nice earner with Sky, so I guess principles and opinions can be bought to change.
Possibly. But it’s a global service as well and let’s not pretend Lewis is universally loved over here like Max almost is in Holland.
From what I've seen across the pond, they're not happy either. It could cost FIA a new bob if US and Canadians start turning away. All the work they put in to get into the US market. They don't take kindly to dodgy sporting decisions.
Mercedes Lodge intent to appeal. Seems like a waste of time as the rules clearly seem to be Masi can do what he wants. Suppose they have to follow the processes through before they can legal action, which I expect they will.
Im not a big F1 fan but today has been remarkable. My suggestion: they should have let them have a one lap race off in two old 1966 Morris Minors. Then we'd get to see who actually was the best driver.
My F1 circle globally is tiny but outside of the casual fans there aren’t many happy F1 fans unless they’re Max obsessives.
Whatever happens it’s taken the gloss off from whoever wins, either one wins by the equivalent of an offside goal in football or a court devision
Yes I follow a lot of F1 accounts on Social media and the names I recognise as sensible people are far from happy. If the race had abother couple of laps left and the same thing had happened then it would just be tough luck. The rules should be the rules and it's disgusting they have tried to weasel out of it, but not at all surprising. Essentially "We have investigated ourselves and concluded we did nothing wrong"
Thing is with comparing it to football is that football is always open to human/individual interpretation or opinion. This was a black and white failure when checked against the rules of the sport after pressure from one of the teams involved. Less taint on Hamilton winning it as he had the Championship stolen from him today by corruptness. So would be righting a wrong and the majority of F1 fans would see that.
Why is all the abuse directed at MV? Hamilton at the same age as MV was just as bad. The officials should be copping for it big time but don't blame Max for their **** ups.
Also, if this was one of the early races in the season it finishes behind the safety car and everyone is congratulating Hamilton for an excellent start, race, and tyre management. It really is disgusting.
That's a good point that decision was likely only made due to it being the last race. But essentially once they made that call they were handing the title to Max by doing something we have never seen before. It was obvious it wouldn't play out well. I really enjoy F1 but this has left a horrible feeling of injustice.
The decision handed him a title he didn’t deserve. There would have been no logical or valid complaints about ending behind the safety car after such a dominant performance - one Horner admitted with ten laps to go. It was also what the rules state should have happened. I’m still seething at how it turned out.
With their been insufficient time for the cars to unlap themselves (under the actual rules) only two options remained. 1. Finish under the safety car. 2. Don't allow cars to unlap. Masi made the 2nd choice which I believe was acceptable under the circumstances. Then after a mumbled response to Horners challenge he did a 180 and changed his mind. I'd have had more respect if he made the wrong call straight away and stuck with it.
Imo what should have happened is when Horner radioed to ask why lapped cars weren't unlapping Masi should have been more decisive and said 'if we allow them to unlap we will finish behind the safety car. By not unlapping it's the only chance of finishing under green flag conditions'. Nice and clear, nobody could argue and max would still have an outside chance.
