I like old threads like this. So just to bring everyone up to date since - Fury went on to KO Wilder, then KO Whyte (at Wembley in front of 94,000). AJ was comfortably seen off by Usyk for all of his belts, then beaten again by the same man in a more competitive rematch. In essence, this ‘battle of Britain’ isn’t the fight it once could have been, for undisputed. But despite Usyk’s clear quality and status, Fury v Joshua is still the biggest heavyweight fight to make, with Wilder v Joshua just as exciting. I’ll pull for Tyson over Joshua of course, but there’s no doubting the big stiff idiot is still a big draw in boxing and maybe, finally, the obsession with fighters having losses on their record is over and we just get to see the top handful of fighters slugging it out. Let’s hope Fury backs his bravado up now, and we see this mega fight officially announced. Fury is the better boxer, better brawler, has better footwork, better IQ, more strings to his bow. But you never know. And that’s the reason we love these big heavyweight matchups.
Easy Tyson is a better boxer an a bigger man than Anthony will ever be, win this if he dunt retire again, and then go on an unify all the belts cos he'll beat Usyk too if he dunt retire before the fight. Tyson an Usyk next year abart April / may, if Tyson dunt retire.
On paper, there’s nothing to give AJ a chance. We kinda knew he couldn’t fight boxers, but now it seems he can’t knock them over either. He’ll always have a punchers chance, but that’s all he’s got for me. And if Wilder’s best shots weren’t good enough, you can’t imagine AJs will be. Still a huge PPV draw though.
All I’d say in addition is that although Wilder’s wild swings weren’t enough, if you look back at his fights, he tends to do very little for round after round and then throw one massive bomb. Joshua (when he looked good) was hitting hard, often, and his knockouts were usually a build up of big punches rather than one huge swing. On the one hand this makes him less likely to knock Fury out because he has to hit him more often, but if he can find a way to hit Fury, he won’t be relying on testing Fury’s chin with one punch and can try and work the body to try to soften him up.
Fury will finish Joshua's career. Not a massive fan of tyson and all the bull **** you get with him but he's far superior than AJ.
I believe my post was May 2021 so at the time that was a reasonably fair assessment of the heavyweight devision. In much the say way as George Foreman is no longer a contender things change
Higgy great post but Anthony is probably one of the most overated Boxers in the game, he's a big unit an come a long way but not a patch on Tyson, you'll see when they get it on, if Tyson dunt retire at least twice between now an then.
Fury talks a good fight. He seems to think it's here is the contract, sign on the line and it's done. He's forced the date, venue, purse split and many other things. He even has a rematch clause incase he loses.
Fury's actually made it easy for the puffed-up bodybuilder to sign on the bottom line He's arranged the date, the venue and offered him a very generous 60/40 split, a split that he himself would not have been offered had it been the other way round. He has also offered AJ the chance to win a belt at the first time of asking, an opportunity that he would otherwise not have had. AJ has no excuse not to sign - the 60/40 split will generate him tens of millions - and he is all about the money, he is a self-proclaimed money man. So it comes down to his cajones and whether he has the guts to face Tyson.
He forced a date on him and wasn't open to doing it the Saturday before Christmas even though he's had longer to recover from his last fight. He made sure he put in a rematch clause which isn't the actions of someone who's completely confident of getting the job done. He's rushing a fight on to someone with back to back defeats which looks an easy option. He chose the split of the purse at 60/40 and if there is a title change and rematch made sure it's only a 50/50 split so the new champion gets a smaller cut than the current champion. The fight will get made. Joshua hasn't avoided anyone.
I think the rematch clause is for Joshua's benefit to get the fight made. I don't think Tyson is in any doubt that he will win the fight. He's given AJ every opportunity he can to sign; now he just needs to get it done. Yes Fury fought in April so has a slightly longer recovery time, but AJ wasn't exactly beat up against Usyk; he is a professional athlete and should be ready, and his supposed initial desire to want to take the fight says that he believes he is ready. As for Joshua not avoiding anyone, he hasn't yet - this is the ultimate litmus test. I really hope the fight gets made, and Fury will destroy him, make no mistake. If AJ wimps out it makes no odds to Tyson, he'll just fight the next man and win that instead
