Seems an odd decision I thought Williams was our most consistent player during the last 3 months of the season and offered excellent cover. I can understand Smith who seems decent enough at league 1 but who could struggle in the championship.
Williams tweeted: <blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en-gb"><p lang="und" dir="ltr"> <a href="https://t.co/UgWZKfWQtz">pic.twitter.com/UgWZKfWQtz</a></p>— George Williams (@George_Willo) <a href="https://twitter.com/George_Willo/status/743057592361099264">15 June 2016</a></blockquote> <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
I totally agree Kev, I feel sorry for the 2 lads, I honestly thought Williams would have something to offer in the championship but who are we to question our management team after the season we've just had, I trust Hecky and his team implicitly, I'm pretty sure they won't steer us far wrong
No he didn't. He said he'd spill the beans if BFC released a version of what's gone on that wasn't true. If the noises coming out of BFC are correct then don't expect to hear anything on the matter from Observer.
I'm not an apologist for the club, but wasn't the statement along the lines of they've had the offer of a contract withdrawn or summat?
Your allowed to talk someone else what's that got to do with it I think basically you sign by the 15th of June or its bye bye,a massive mistake as far as I,m concerned.
George Smith has tweeted this: <blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en-gb"><p lang="und" dir="ltr">❤️ <a href="https://t.co/mzQi6ysyBG">pic.twitter.com/mzQi6ysyBG</a></p>— George smith (@georgesmith0123) <a href="https://twitter.com/georgesmith0123/status/743083954253750273">15 June 2016</a></blockquote> <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
Is it me, or do the statements from both Georges read rather similar? As if they'd been helped to write them by someone else. What with this and this Scowen number 7 business I'm getting scared that things are falling apart, just a day after being on a high after the Adam Hamster signing.
Can't for the life of me understand why they've released Williams. Would love to know what's gone off there. Unless I've just imagined him being our standout full back for the last 6 months? Smith has obviously fallen down the pecking order. I think he's actually better off with a fresh start. And I will take a keen interest in seeing how he develops. I would imagine he'll get a L2 club at worst. It was only 12 months or so ago that he was highly rated at Oakwell. Danny loved him. Maybe Chesterfield need a left back? But aye. Gobsmacked with the Williams decision.
Aye, the more I think about it the stranger it feels. He's come from non-league and I expect he was on a very modest wage even by League 1 standards. I doubt we'd have had to break the bank to keep him, and even if he wasn't going to start we've got no chance of finding a back up who offers anywhere near the same combination of versatility, reliability and value for money. Plus, as I understand it we'd only have to offer him a contract on the same terms as his previous one to ensure that we got some compo if he turned it down. Therefore even if we didn't think he would be up to the demands of the Championship (and I think he earned a chance to prove he is) you'd have thought we would have offered him a contract on the same terms - if he accepts we get a good squad player very cheap, and if he buggers off elsewhere we get some compo. Very weird...
Someone's probably already said but not got chance to wade through the entire thread. My hunch would be that they really want Bree to step up at right back next season because they think he'll have most resale value and is one of our own. I think that's probably reinforced by how keen they were to get bree back in post injury against Chesterfield. I'd guess then that this means the squad status and money that was offered in contract was more in line with a backup player than first team regular. Williams then probably decided that he'd prefer to chance his arm elsewhere for more football, and maybe more money. If you'd taken as many steps forward as he did last year then probably wouldn't want to stagnate. If this is the case then fair play to him. I'm absolutely gutted to see him leave though. I would imagine it's a similar scenario for young Judd
Bree wasn't,t up to league 1 football so what makes you think he,ll be up to the championship prone to bad errors.
Not saying it's what i think. But can see it being what the club thinks. Let's not forget Bree is still ridiculously young, and shown a lot of promise. They'll be desperate to ensure he doesn't turn into another Digby who similarly had lots of potential but spent most of his formative years on the subs bench or on the injury list
Don,t get me wrong the lad has loads of ability but for me he ain't ready for the championship yet,I presume they will be bringing someone else in.
