Sad to see him go, but it was always a matter of time given the tory led administration of the BBC nowadays.

I do find it rich that those of a right wing leaning who repeatedly preach of a desire for free speech take such issue of others using their right to free speech, well, the ones they disagree with.

 

Obscene the amount of money he received for about 20 minutes work a week. All paid by us, the license payer. Any of a few thousand ex footballers would do that job for a tenth of the fee Lineker was receiving. Don't watch MotD because of the superfluous talking between matches. I watch highlights on YouTube in a third of the time. Lineker will not be missed.

 

Same here not watched MOTD for around 20yrs now, maybe time for a change.

 

He's not finished with the BBC. Only stepping down from MOTD. He's doing the next word cup and the FA cup until 2026

 

That could actually work if they went down the route HIGNFY went down when they sacked Angus Deayton. Have a different host every single week. There would be thousands to choose from who have played the game, so you wouldn't ever need a repeat host.

 

Each to their own - I think he’s great on there and really enjoy MOTD!

But having said that, with the budget at the BBC tight I’m not surprised they’ve decided to part ways with him on MOTD. Probably save themselves a million per year. And presumably the show isn’t as big as it was before youtube etc

I don't know if you ever watch her Sunday morning politics show, but I do virtually every week and I have not detected any bias at all on her part, contrary to what some people claim. I wonder if these people actually watch her, or whether they are just repeating a line which will be approved of by those whose opinions they respect.

 

Not so much now Labour have lurched to the right but she was horrendously biased when Corbyn was leader of the opposition.

 

Bias is often subjective and we can be a little blinkered if someones bias aligns more closely with our own.

I've little doubt Laura Kuenssberg is of the right. I've been interviewed by her back in the days of the lunchtime bbc2 politics show. My wife has met her. We've both personally gained the view she has a bias to the right.

She was brought through by Andrew Neil on the politics show. On her podcast on Brexit, she regularly used the term 'remoaners'. She's had numerous softball interviews with DePfeffel Johnson. Recently she had to cancel an interview with him because it was discovered she 'accidentally' sent him her interview notes in advance.

She's been found to breach impartiality rules in the past and breached electoral rules in 2019 when somehow on the day of the election while polls were still operating, she stated that piles of ballots were lower for labour.

There are plenty of other examples if you use that Google thing.

Whether she always expresses her bias on every interview nowadays... I couldn't tell you as I choose not to listen to her.

 

He gets paid about 1.4 million for MOTD. Not bad for his 25 mins of screen time.

Micah Richard’s and Nark chapman get more than a million less.

How anybody thinks Lineker is worth that for what he does is beyond me.

Max Headroom for new presenter would give him a lot more presenting jobs on TV too.

 

If we ran through and created a list of people who earned way beyond their talent and ranked them in order of biggest waste first.... I'm not sure Lineker would make it into the first volume.

 

What is the equivalent rate for the main host of Sky Sports football or ITV football?

If ITV/Sky pay £40-50k per episode, and Lineker does 30 episodes per season, then he is paid the going rate. If ITV/Sky are paying £100k, he's underpaid and if ITV/Sky pay £10k, hes overpaid.

 

Perhaps she has matured as a presenter. Perhaps she was advised that she should endeavour to remain at all times impartial. She doesn't make her own political leanings obvious in any way now. I find her a very good interviewer now. I find Victoria Derbyshire, on Newsnight, even better, and I certainly have the impression that her political sympathies are left of centre. By the way, I voted to remain in the EU and was devastated when I heard the result of the referendum. Also, I have voted Labour in every single General Election since I reached the age of majority, so I am far more likely to be sensitive to right-wing bias than to left -wing bias.

 

I'd say the best presenters/hosts/journalists are Victoria Derbyshire, Mishal Husain and Emma Barnett. Interestingly, I always thought Andrew Marr showed the odd glimpse of right leaning, but since he left the BBC, he seems go be more critical of their impartiality stance of giving minority interests and views equal footing. Sadly something that is now the norm and that has been manipulated by numerous populists.

When I was reminding myself of Kuenssbergs historical biases, I noted the BBC had multiple complaints that they tokenly investigated following a recent interview with Yvette Cooper. And the Johnson incident was just a few weeks ago.

I tend to watch sky news, but just since the election, it very much feels like they are keen to gun for the new govt and some of the interviews they conduct go way beyond how they questioned previous administrations. It feels more and more like they are just running angles of stories to find fault rather than just asking questions or reporting the news of the day. When you think of the stories that they simply ignored in the past (the Arcuri affair, Sunaks renewal of personal helicopter contract to the tune of £54m... Many more I can't be bothered to list) it feels all the more biased.

 

That’s alright then. After all it’s only public money….

 

I think he's a articulate knowledgeable presenter and personally I like his sense of humour. 25 years is a long time to host, wonder if his replacement will do as long a shift!?
