That stat doesn't mean a great deal in isolation. Without seeing an illustrative map of the distance and direction of passes it doesn't offer much insight.
Can see why Mads was given the award at the game, he was assured in the little defending we needed to do. But I also think Kitching played an important role early in the game. His movement forward mean we were able to pass through them, rather than play head tennis. Connell made us tick in the middle of the midfield three, a role that I don’t think any of our numerous other midfielders can play and we saw a drop in quality when he went off. His shots also led to the first two goals. But, have gone for Cole. Two goals, unlucky it wasn’t three. But would have no complaints if anyone I named above got it.
I've seen Tarn score 7 in league games twice. One was obviously Huddersfield, but the other? Well that was a 7-3 win against Bristol City. In 1961. It doesn't happen very often!
I thought we lost 7-4 to Bristol City, with Lol Chappel getting all four for Barnsley? I saw us win 7-1 at Workington, back in April 1976. John Peachey 3, Bobby Doyle 2, Peter Price & John Saunders got 1 each (I think! ).
That was before my time, 1958 or 59 I think, and at Ashton Gate. The 61 game was at Oakwell, I was there as a 9 year old with my much loved late Aunt, and I remember as we came out of the ground she was going on about "payback time"
No no, my mistake it WAS at Oakwell, in August 1958 (before my time as I said) and you're right about Chappell, he did indeed score all four. The revenge match was in November 1961. Ken Oliver scored a hat trick.
A very good point. There was one spell in the second half when Russell made a number of passes in under a minute. In each case, the ball travelled little more than a couple of yards. Short sideways and backwards passes cannot be compared with successful raking 40 yard forward passes.
The 7-4 defeat was at Oakwell. I was there. Chappell did indeed score all four of our goals. If memory serves me right, the legendary John Atyeo scored a hat-trick for Bristol City in that match.
Last season, even early this season... no one would have followed that free kick in, it would have been a defender kicking it out for a corner or throw in. Now, Cole first to the ball with true strikers instincts, followed closely by Watters.
I agree that statistics in isolation can be interpreted in various ways and be misleading. The reasoning for posting the stat was was in response to the opinions of Kane being guilty of giving the ball away. I feel - even accounting for the limitations of the stat - that in relation to the other midfielders this opinion is a tad harsh.
I like Kane, so whilst I accept the stats, my observation from the first half were that his misplaced passes really put us on the back foot. There were easy passes on and he put us into trouble. His impact however was good even though in my opinion he mishit his assist and his goal!
