From that I take it he was the first and last person to have a transplant and go back to his life of excess.

How do you know the same wouldn't have happened to one of those others wanting a transplant?

Perhaps what people should focus on is the chronic shortage of donors, and perhaps a case like this can bring it to light, perhaps, and I'm not entirely certain of figures here but I suspect I'm not far off, if everyone who could donate did then everyone who required a transplant could have one.

How many people on here pontificating about how he wasted a donation are actually donors themselves.

The tragedy in this is not that Best was an alcoholic but that in order to qualify for a transplant had to have been off the booze for a year - so having successfully kicked the habit for at least a year he ended up back on it.

i would have thought a case like his does more harm than good

when effecting transplant numbers. there will be far more people that decide not to be a donor after seeing him than will decide to be one because of him.

Why would they not decide to be a donor because of George Best? I intend donating every possible part of my body when I die and I don't give a monkeys who gets them. At the end of the day I will have given another person a chance of a longer life irrespective of who they are.

im sure there will be some people put off

because they see it as not going to a worthy cause. that doesnt make it right but it will happen (And already will have happened)

Yet another reason why I love you

From a purely selfish point of view , the more people like you in the world , the more chance of Laura living into adulthood .(L) (L) (L) (Y) (Y) (Y)

Was it you and crystal that suggested the law should be the other way round

and that you should have to opt out of being a donor rather than having to opt in? i think that a change like that would be a massive improvement

It was Crystal who said it

More and more countries are now walking down that particular road . As you're well aware , this country doesn't . As I said before , the more people who think like Cazi , the more chance of Laura living to be an adult .

What is a worthy cause? The organ that Best received could have gone to another person and that persons body could have rejected it and they die shortly after the transplant as a result. 10 days, 2 years, 9 years.......doesn't matter how much longer they live after the receipt of the organs. The fact that they were given the chance of it is why people choose to donate.

an so are other diseases and disorders

again, can't blame a person for having it, but you can blame a person for not seeking help.

a life wasted at the bottom of a bottle is a horrible thing to see. especially when help was offered repeatedly and brushed aside.

He WAS given a second chance.....

.. and he pissed it up.

I feel sorry for his family, and the surgeon that operated on him.

Thank you for your offer .

However , I hope you manage to live a long , happy , healty life . If it's at all possible , I hope that I am a perfect match for Laura , so she can have both my kidneys . I would much rather go on dialysis than have my daughter go through it .
