I was the same, i spent a fair bit of my own cash buying my own kit especially when i was in the recce platoon pre Bosnia and keen as mustard. We had a choice and many of the lads bought some of their own kit. What we always wondered was why the kit we bought ourselves wasnt general issue but we there was **** all we could do about it.

the reason is the officaial who purchase the kit dont wear it!! They once gave us vehicles to test, A Hummer, 2 Land Rovers, Range Rover, BMW, Shogun, Jeep and 3 others and we gave our verdicts as a platoon as to which was the best, Hummer 1st, Range Rover 2nd, Shogun 3rd and Lanny 4th.....They still ordered all Lannys!!!! I never wore Army kit anyway, Norge Shirts, German Waterproofs, Russian gonksack, only gortex bivvy bag was used on exercise. and OOPS did miss the main bit out didnt i
