and how else do student nurses train???

They all have to go to Uni.... The NHS doesnt train nurses any more (wish they did personally)

And as for propaganda... would I encourage my kids to do it??? Not in a million years mate

    RE: And 'probationer' nurses

Im not arguing nurses are over paid Ali, or that a lot dont do a brilliant job they do, and should be applauded for it!! I am aware that student nurses often do put lots of hours in and recieve very little pay, this is the same for other professions and even for those in lesser supply with more qualifications. But nobody is forced into the job, and in the market ecomomy of the world there is always someone who will step into your sures whether u are a nurse a teacher, a doctor or a lawyer.

My full support to the great public servants that are good nurses!

Ali, if you are unqualified you simply have to accept being paid lower wages. This is a fact for us all I am afraid. It is not only those who are nurses!!

Ali - Nursing is a cracking profession - and Nurses should stop doing themselves down!

People going from college get a £6,000 bursary and don't have to pay tuition fees.

Secondments from hospital get something like 2/3rds their salary

Despite current headlines job prospects are good, transferability of employment is the highest.

Hours are flexible, the pension scheme is amazing

The starting salary is cracking for a 23 year old.

Overtime is paid, and shift allowance. The NHS is Mr. Bendy when it comes to having a family.

Would I advise my Daughters to do it? No they can earn more elsewhere.

Did I advise my HCA wife to do the degree course. Oh yes.

Nurses should start bigging up the positives and stop moaning about how **** it is.

I just cant see why footballers should be asked to help nurses out. Shouldn't the government do that? Brown and his boys already take nearly half of their wages so why should they then start helping the govt with their wagebill. I totally agree that nurses of all scales do a fabulous job and are very much in need. But so are cleaners, factory workers, administrators, shop workers etc. All these jobs help the country tick along. And most are less paid than nurses, firemen, police etc.

Well after 24 years as a nurse (qualified)

and over 25years in the NHS I bow to your greater knowledge of the system than mine.

Unfortuantely I've never taken a career break, worked thru having both my kids, had the misfortune to marry another nurse so because the NHS is so bendy about having families we paid for 2 kids to go to a childminder as the NHS nurseries were full and too expensive for us.

The 'ads' for nursing are not the reality. The NHS being flexible is a mirage... Only imho like

RE: Then get thisen to Uni

"and do a degree then see what you can earn"

I think if a Doctor or consultant were to say this to a nurse, that if they were trained or educated to a higher standard then they would be on a similar payscale to Dr's etc then the nurses would have a right strop.

Or is it ok for a nurse to say this because grades below nurse obviously do not make a valuable contribution to the health service.

    I'm interested

Ali. You do sound pissed off with the way nurses are treated and not being in the job I cant understand fully. I can imagine its not good not being appreciated! Which is always crap and sure there is a lot of mismanagment aswell. What about the point this guy has jus made about student nurses is that right?

the point i was making was that

£19k for a graduate salary isnt that good
Teachers get more straight outta college
So do medics, graduate coppers, human resource administrators etc

And as I work with medics yep they would say it & I'd agree I would have worked harder at school & trained as a medic or vet if I could turn the clock back. Would have saved me putting myself through doing a degree on top of my nursing qualifaction when I had 2 kids and a full time job.

and NO the NHS didnt give me time off or pay for it

19k is more than the average

graduate salary if you discount the London area. For example the average salary for a trainee solicitor after 4 years studying and very high fees is just over 17k it really is not that terrible?

    yes they get a bursary

and dont pay tuition just like student teachers

The other side of the coin is that student nurses do work shifts but dont earn a wage for it, unlike other students.

Thing is after 3/4 years at Uni newly qualified nurse can come out to find no jobs other than bank or temp part time.

I adore what I do. I'm 3rd generation and fought it but it was in my blood & at 21 I gave in and trained.

Nurses of all grades especially highly skilled, trained & experiences like me have just been 'culled' by the Trust I work for. Hours have been cut, posts have been amalgamated and grades have been cut as these nurses are no longer valued for the work they have done for the past years.

So yes I'm disheartened by the NHS, the way experience and qualifications are disguarded as being 'extraneous to needs' disgusts me

What about city slickers, b-list, third rate actors and p*ss poor musicians getting in on the act...

I agree with the idea in principle but I don't see why footballers should be singled out - if asked who contributes more from a societal point of view - footballers or the Paris Hiltons / Jade Goodys / Robbie Williams' of the world my vote would go with Alan Shearer any day of the week despite him being a cheating, boring, mardy Geordie.

Saying that the government simply can't find the money to pay the nurses what with the coffers been so tight - have a look around you, folk living in huts, famine, disease - oh, hang on I was thinking of another country...

Take a few bob out of the £8bn that's just been awarded to the handful of captains of industry (I love that term, it makes them sound exciting, interesting people as opposed to selfish, materially obsessed sociopaths) and dish that about - it might plug a few holes here and there.

I would have a go at the idle aristocracy while I'm at it but I can almost picture M1 Tyke ready to jump to their defence and I know how flustered he gets when people start getting envious...

    RE: better still

Ali Im with you all the way!!!! We have to take action to stop this kind of crap!! I for one am gunna be writing to all local MPs to ask them to vote against the ID card bill which is due to pass in April. The London School of Econmics estimates this scheme will cost 19 billion of our money! It is supposedly going to help fight ID fraud, organised crime and terrorism. It has howver been shown that the technology used for the new biometric passports can be cloned with technology costing less than 100 pounds. The ID card scheme will have little effect on the crooks and terrorists! Lets spend the 19 billion on making sure our hospitals are better run and other worthy things!

Sorry for the rant, this debate has got me thinking politically (doh)
