Why should he be shown respect?

Why should I show any respect to a drunken sot who has wasted his second chance of a life?

I'd much rather save my kind words for the nurses etc who tend him and the people in his position who have come through their problems, thankyou very much.

George Best - good footballer, wánk person. A drink-sodden old fool who'll never learn.

    Pure B*ll*cks.

Did you ever see George play?

He was a more rounded player than either Law or Charlton.
Don't knock a player who's boots you are not fit to lick.

John Aston was a good player but he didn't come anywhere near the talents of George Best.

Bestie would have been acknowledged as the Greatest ever player if he had been born English.

His game had every thing. He scored lots of goals and made even more.
He was two footed and a better dribbler the Maradona. He was also an excellent tackler and he had no fear of anyone.Kick him and he would come back for more.

My mental state is perfectly fine thank you. I have a lot of sympathy for anyone that is ill and can't help it, and I'm afraid I don't buy the argument that Best's problems are not down to him.

Thanks. You argued your point very well there.

Once again, a really convincing argument.

    I'm a 'fecking ******' and a 'grade 1 sicko.'

Oh well. I can live with that.

Don't question the illness....personally I feel sorry for the guy......not what this thread is abou

When most die that are in the public eye we have to endure a week of people telling us how great they were
He was a good player.....probably a great player.......but he wasn't better than a lot of players in his time and certainly not better than some that have played since
Best wasn't strong or fast on the ball but had quick feet
But he was the first pop star player......so the fame has stuck

There'll be no tears here when he goes.

I feel sorry for the person who's been denied a perfectly good organ, and the surgeons who gave Best a second chance. A chance that he had and pissed it up the wall, so to speak.

I may be mistaken but didn't Pele actually acknowledge Best to be the most talented player in the world?

    Correct.

In total agreement with you, Longley. (Is that the first time ever? :pff)

"Best wasn't strong or fast on the ball but had quick feet"

Sorry Nudger - but with that statement you make it clear you never saw Bestie play - other than via replays possibly.

Georgie WAS strong and he WAS fast. I've seen him skin some of the best full-backs in the country at the time, just ask Georgie Cohen at Fulham, Ken Shillito at Chelsea, to name but two. He WAS strong - many of his markers e.g. the likes of Chopper Harris, realised the only way to stop Best was to foul him by whatever method was suitable, and Bestie invariably got straight back up and got on with the game. Unlike Gazza for instance.

    Also meant to add..

... practically ALL of his fellow professionals at the time, including the likes of Bobby Charlton, Law, Roger Hunt, Jimmy Greaves, Bobby Moore etc., have since opined that he was THE best footballer the UK had produced. I suspect fans of Stanley Mathews might disagree - but I think those opinions speak volumes about the guy's footballing abilities.

Yes, he ultimately blew it all and yes, his drinking initially started because he lacked self-control in his private life - and he's paying the price now. All that doesn't detract from the fact he was a brilliant footballer, one-in-a-million who gave pleasure to thousands of football fans in this country and around the world, in much the same way as players like Henry, Ronaldinho and co do these days.
