The key is to do something you like

That way you're more likely to stick to it.

To my mind, mountain bike riding would be far more interesting than being stuck in a gym. But not for everyone.

Or maybe you're a sociable type and would be better suited playing a team game. I'd much rather push myself in the pursuit of a win in a game of football than trudge along running. The caveat being that you're much more likely to injure yourself playing football and knock your fitness back. Depends who you're playing and how clumsy you are I guess.

Also, don't discount non-sporting things like dancing. Added bonus of women everywhere.

This time last year I got stuck into cycling... Nothing drastic, but when the weather was ok, a quick uphill ride before work... 20 minutes. Did it 3 times a week and got quite fit. When the bad weather kicked in , October time, I joined Tankersley Manor on a short term arrangement for the pool. I swam three times a wek, and more often than not had the pool to myself. The savings I made by being outside on the bike, meant that spending on a more expensive swim was well worth it. Plus I had a change that I could get enthusiastic about.
As other folks have said, it has to be something that keeps your interest. Good luck.

    Ok... Bad enthusiasm??

I'm not getting on my bike if it's tipping it down, too dark or too cold.

Agreed - unless you live in Canada, in which case cycling is out for 6 months of the year!! And running on snow and ice with -20 wind-chill isn't much fun either. See, I'm getting the excuses in already................

Are you running with my mate Jim, if not get going with him, follow his diet and training and you will be down to 8 stone in no time. The old tw4t has been very ill for about 3 years but when he came over last year we went on the Dove Valley trail ( me on a bike, no not our lass ) him running and he was still impressive, not bad for a 64 year old.

Don't bother with a gym, save your money and

get yourself a nice hybrid bicycle and a Turbo Trainer. When the weather is ok you can get out on the road or bike trails (the one to Manchester over Woodhead on the old Great Central railway is great) and when its p*ssing down, you mount the bike on the turbo trainer and cycle while watching the telly or something.

    Sorted.
