Ok, so what's the answer ?

How do we as individuals change things ?

In this country folk are to busy trying to make ends meet to take a genuine interest in global warming. We have 1st world problems, very few people haven't access to the staples of life, they moan if their iphone goes on the blink.

The biggest polluters are the newly industrialized nations who are only trying to achieve what we have already. What we got from mucking up the environment . Oh and of course the USA who don't give a flip.

Then there's the serious green scientists with points to make but there's also IN MY OPINION a number of self interest groups making money out of this. These are easy pickings to discredited by the other side of the argument the 'petrodollar' companies and countries. It is a battle of ******** between them. The truth is in there somewhere.

Well that's a bit of what I think and I'm not saying I'm right it's just my opinion.

BTW Spirit Ditch unlike you I'm not frightened about things I can't affect... well not true really as what really frightens me is Tom Kennedy's defending ;)

    Oh dear, here we go...

take a look at these climate change deniers. they're the same people who said smoking doesn't cause cancer or that HMO's are better than universal health care.

check out who funds these people too.

What needs to be done (but what won't be done)

is to create a global green economy where ecologically sound initiatives have value and can be traded as such. So just as we pay the Arabs for their oil, we could pay the Brazilians for their oxygen, i.e. make the rainforest effectively pay for itself so that deforestation is no longer the economically inevitable path. It's no good wagging a finger at the Amazonian loggers when they're only trying to earn a buck. No good chastising developing countries for industrialisation when they're only treading a familar path.

All this could be achieved by a globally pooled fund, apportioned accordingly, based upon agreed targets and initiatives. Of course this will never get off the ground because 95% of people are completely selfish*. It would effectively add a tax to so many goods and services and this would be met with almost universal outrage. It's cuckoo to expect people to pay for oxygen.

*I've just spent a soul destroying afternoon with workmates trying to persuade me to take tax avoidance measures. Not one of them could see why I had fundamental objections to it. Notice the government allows these loopholes by the way, a mechanism for the rich to get richer. The same people were massively against Australia's carbon tax, not just in practice but in principle as well. Rabid capitalism abounds. It's easy to lose faith in humanity.

That's as may be, but do you honestly think there aren't sweeteners or backhanders flying in both directions? The green market is worth billions too

There are few things that stick out that we were taught/informed of in primary school in the 80's: (Global warming/climate change was never mentioned).

    - The Ozone Layer: Some massive hole in a protective layer of the atmosphere that causes people who are exposed to get cancer. How can what is essentially a collection of gas held in place by gravity have a hole in it? You never hear anything about it these days.

    - Brazilian Deforestations: Apparently an area the size of Wales was deforested every year in Brazil; I know Brazil is a big country but how many times the size of Wales is the rainforest? Not that many surely. I know they have curbed deforestation a lot but the way we were told as kids was that it was something that had been going on for years.

The reason I'm sceptical of the mainstream views on climate change (and how much of it is down to human behaviour) is because we've had similar things in the past which have come and gone (30 years ago the experts were warning of global cooling not warming), but governments worldwide have really got hold of this one to the point where they've turned a theory which hasn't been proven beyond doubt into something that influences taxation.

If they really thought human influence on climate change was so bad, we'd only be producing power through nuclear means (yes the waste can be a problem but that's another issue unrelated to climate change) and much more money would go into researching viable/practical electric vehicles.

The trouble is the governments/banks/oil companies all p*ss in the same pot and they are the only people who can actually change things but they don't.

Instead we have it rammed down our throats every day so that not too many folk will moan when the cost of fuel and taxes based on CO2 emissions go up or are introduced on something else.

It's all a con to scare the **** out of everyone so we can be taxed to death.

The earth is cooler then it has been in the past and the climate changes in cycles.

If the Earth wobbles on it axis just watch how the climate will change.

I would recommend Daniel Defoe's book 'The Storm' to those who think the current rain and gales are a new phenomenon.

If you look at the history of the world and all the species of plant and animal life that have occupied the land, sea and air at any given time, it doesn't take long to reach the conclusion that the human race is the vermin that took over, absorbed and excreted the planet's resources at the expense of every other form of life.

correct - when people say we need to save the planet , what they should be saying is that we need to save the planet from all the damage the human race has created
