I'd have to disagree I'm afraid, and how soon people have forgotten about the drubbings we got week after week in the Championship. This team is, unfortunately, a long way off Championship standard. If people think winning a few games in League One equates to Championship standard, they'll be sadly mistaken. A virtually new team would be required, and where do we find the money for that? We have nothing at the moment. Best to stabilise in League One and build, in my opinion.
Total surprise for me thought would be mid table and or 12 points worse off. Imho we have a great coach in Duff to thank for our position in this league.
Play offs.. maybe, one or two teams hunting us down. Think we'll need the rub of the green with injuries and suspension (like everyone else) in the run in. Some strong squads at the top Wendies Plymouth Derby and Ipswich.. and two of them will miss out on automatic. So playoffs won't be a breeze. We lost too many silly games at the start of the season to challenge for automatic ourselves. So I'd take play offs-promotion in a heart beat.. but I still think this season may just be a bit of a stretch too far for us actually go up. But a decent summer window under Duff.. lose one or two but bring in three or four.. make the squad stronger and go for top 2 next season.. But pleased with Duff and Disco and the rest. For the first time in years I was impressed with our January window so well done to Khalid and the board aswell.
The problems last season ran much deeper than the players, many of whom were playing in the play offs the season before. I don’t think the gulf between the top of league 1 and the bottom of the championship is that great, the bottom of the championship is pretty dire which made last season all the more annoying. The gulf is between the top 7 or 8 teams and the rest. On the topic of the thread, we’ve exceeded our expectations, as I expected us to be one of the better teams of ‘the rest’. But if we do go up, we’ll have had to do well against other top league 1 clubs, both in the run in, and then in the play offs. If we do that, we won’t need a whole new team. We’ll of course need to strengthen, mainly up front and replacing loans. But not a massive overhaul. The longer we’re out of the Championship, the harder the rebuild becomes
I never did the sums, however I expected us to be top 10 this season, with top 6 a realistic target. so I guess you'd have to be around the 50-point mark at this stage, to align to that
Not me. With the squad at his disposal Duff is performing exceptionally well. The forward line remains poor but our game management is pretty good and the players are obviously motivated and well drilled.
Forward line remains poor?......you’ve not given new arrivals time to gel yet(irrespective of sending off yesterday)....
I agree, I understand not being absolutely ready for championship, but this day and age its never too soon. Its easy saying just stabilise, but when we start losing players like Andersen, Connell, Williams etc every year because we're in league one, people will moan. We need to return ASAP. Finances are literally leagues apart, its rare teams assemble the team we did with Hourihane, Scowen etc. We need promotion
Me. https://barnsleyfc.org.uk/threads/league-one-promotion-odds.314316/#post-2955303 Not many of us on here expected a promotion push though.
I don’t see either offering immediate improvements to the level of a top 6 side. As you say early days but as of now there has been no improvement. That doesn’t mean things can’t change.
From Day 1 I thought MD would do a job for us and he is doing. top manager who has the potential to manage at a higher level for sure; whether it's with us or not. I expected top 6 with him on charge. it was clear he wasn't going to suffer fools gladly and it was also clear he was going to improve the cohesion and togetherness of the group. he's done that in spades. My only concern wad that he wouldn't settle domestically with his family staying in the SW. however his work ethic is spot on and he shows no signs of being unhappy.....so, long may it continue. the man's a diamond.
At the current points to games ratio we’re on track for 82 points. Enough for top six but we need a few more for top two. Beating the others above us will give us a great chance
Delighted with how the season has gone. Last year was an utter omnishambles from top to bottom. Duff has done incredibly well, promotion would be fantastic but the financial ramifications of another year in league one are also quite stark.
